Purchasing Taiyo Yudens

Blank Media Discuss, Purchasing Taiyo Yudens at Consumables forum; I am new to all of this, but after reading a bunch of posts, I'd like to buy some TY DVD+Rs. Many people said different brands can sell media manufactured by TY. How do I know if the media was manufactured by TY? Will it be on the packaging somewhere?

Yes, there are some branded TY media like Fuji, Sony, Plextor etc..
It should have Made in Japan on the package.

So, any DVD+R's made in Japan are TYs? Would you reccommend any brand in particular?

Thanks.

If you're in the US, then branded TY at retailers: ( these are Made In JAPAN only media )

Sony MIJ 8x +R ( YUDEN000 T02 )
TDK MIJ 8x +R ( YUDEN000 T02 )
TDK MIJ 8x -R ( TYG02 ) *
Fuji MIJ 8x +R ( YUDEN000 T02 ) *
Fuji MIJ 8x -R ( TYG02 ) *

* difficult or getting difficult to find.

Sony MIJ 8x +R's are most likely your best bet. You may luck out with some Fuji's.

NOTE: Sony MIJ 8x -R are NOT TY (to the best of my knowledge). I believe they are SONY08D1 or some sort of Sony MID.

Otherwise, look for online retailers for unbranded TY.

Is there no stamper serial on these discs? It should be found on the recordable side of the disc, on a dye-colored ring surrounding the clear plastic hub.

Yeah, I made the mistake the today day and ended up buying a 25 spindle of 16x fuji's on sale cheap. Turned out to be prodisc. I forgot to check for Made in japan, these are MIT's. (I had hoped they would be T03's, haha silly me)

So, before I waste more money, If I buy a 50/100 spindle of +R's fuji, tdk, or sony as long as they are MIJs. They will be forsure Tys?

Holy hell folks, rather than playing russian roulette, you can buy unbranded authentic TY from a reliable source. If you are in the US you can order them straight from www.rima.com. Great discs from a great source. If you are in the UK/Europe you can pick up Verbatim Pastels (made by Taiyo Yuden) from www.blankdiscshop.co.uk. Just be sure not to confuse them with the Verbatim White Labels.

Blankdiscshop also sell Panasonic TY's which are printable and the surface is far better than even TY's own branded discs. If you don't mind the non full face and the panasonic logo on the inner circle, these are the best TY's you can get.

Thanks for the suggestion, I have ordered from rima, meritline (liked rima better), and I know newegg has some TY unbranded.

the issue is cost and shipping time at least for me. I ran out and need some tomarrow.

Dude, he said it's fake.
That should tell you something. Why don't you believe him?

Sigh.....
if real TY's had scores like that (and pay more attention to the graph itself, which is horrible, not the score; one single pixel thin high PIF spike can make a score plummet to 0), you think we would be buying them? Think, man....

Genuine 8x DVD+R TY media should have a serial number of the form TGxxxxxx. If it isn't there, it is fake. rdgrimes and Darthboy are right.

Cost? The 100 packs of the 8x -R will run you less than $40 shipped with ground shipping. Even the in-store specials usually aren't much cheaper than that and unlike the in-store specials you don't have to screw around hope that your local store carries the MIJ discs. Can't tell you how many wasted trips to BB I have made just to confirm that they only stock MIT media and virtually all other stores in my area stock nothing but MIT. As for the wait, you only have to wait for the initial batch to get there, if you are smart then you will buy a new batch when your current spindle gets down to 10-12 discs. Then you will never run out. If you don't mind the value line TY (and the possibility of getting 4x media) then you can get some crazy deals from www.shop4tech.com. 100 packs for $27.90 shipped after entering in the following coupon code: Xmas10.

Thank you guys for all valuable info about spotting fake TYs. You are right, today I bought Sony DVD+Rs, made in Japan, and they were TYs, with those serial numbers on the inside surface. Those TYs from Silver-Tek, did not have anu numbers. Thanks again.

Wow, that Silver-Tek site is advertising them as Taiyo Yuden, and even including TY's corporate logo on there. Anyone with contacts at TY legal and/or Philips (for DVD+R media code licensing) should give them a heads up.
