I'm having an issue with a new pack of verbatim dvd+r dl discs I bought from New Egg. I previously had bought a pack of these discs (elsewhere) and they worked great with my Sony DRU-710A. This batch spins up and then my drive make a kind of a clunking sound. This happens a few times before activity stops. I thought my drive was dying, although I did think it was odd that it could still read other recorded media just fine. In any case I got my hands a BENQ 1620 with the latest firmware and had the exact same problem. It made that same clunking sound when using the Verbatim media. I realize both of these drives are older. Did Verbatim change something and now neither of these drives can recognize this media? I tried using DVD Identifier but it just says
ERROR : Unable To Initialize Disc In Time : Not ready - Medium not present [02/3A/00]

You have ordered 8x DVD+R DL?

Then that is the conclusion! Use 2.4x DVD+R DL!!

It just says UP TO 6x Speed (on the packaging). It also says made in India, since I know Verbatim fairly recently started being made there, if that matters in this case. The Verbatim part number is 95310.

As you will see if you follow this link below the web site shows this as the 2.4x media.

Besides even if I bought media rated for 8x, wouldn't it dumb down to what my drive can do?

Verbatim has been selling the made in India media for years, just not in North America. That may be the reason for your lack of success though, as the MII DL media isn't quite up to snuff.
