| What or who is telling you that the drives don't recognize those blanks?? Fire up nero cd dvd speed, insert some media and check DISC INFO.

...! My LG drive's light just wont stop blinking when I insert some certain brands (Like Mitsubishi chemical chorp), that it recognised just fine before. Also when I insert Cd-rw or dvd-rw (no matter what brand) i can write on them only ONCE, then whenever i insert them to be erased NERO 6 or Ashampoo burning studio 7 says the 'cd-rom'/'dvd rom' can't be erased!!! Although when i erase cd-rw s with VSO's Eraser...it completes the operation and says 'failed", but in reality erases the cd-rw media just fine! it doesn't work on dvd-rw media. you are asking me to post a scan log of nero 6? | Aha! Excellent, this *could* be an easy fix ![]() OK, first of all - go into Daemon Tools' settings, and Uncheck any option like "Hide CDR media" or similar. Then give the discs another go. If that doesn't work, go into Alcohol's Settings, go to Emulation, and uncheck "Ignore media type" option (or similar). Hopefully one of those two will sort it out. Good luck!

| Hail Arachne! THANKS man!it fixed the problem (my drives recognise cd-rw media just fine), haven't tried dvd-rw , but will try soon...er, should i also uncheck Alcohol's "launch cd/dvd manager without ignore media type option" too? I have only 1 problem lft..and that is...that my dvd ram drive just won't recognise certain brand of blank dvds anymore, whereas it recognised those just fine a few months back! Also, my friend has the same DVD RAM drive and that one recognises all media just fine...can u help? I live in India, and am running out of DVD-R brands real fast!! My drive now recognises "SONY16D1" ok, but not "MCC", "RICOH" and similar brands. |

![]() If the drive seems OK, I'd leave that setting as it is...if you still experience problems though, then you know you can go back and uncheck it ![]() Hmmm. You mentioned DVD-R....might be worth trying some DVD+R, as I know my LG drives at least, prefer +Rs. Have you tried different spindles of the discs it won't recognise? Could just be one or two bad spindles, but as I say, give +R a go

| DO NOT BUY A NEW DRIVE Why this information is not easy to find is beyond me. Try this: Device Manager IDE ATA/ATAPI controllers >right click Primary IDE Channel (I do secondary as well) Properties Advanced Settings Transfer Mode >Change from DMA to PIO This worked for me both times this problem cropped up. Don't know why so many "EXPERT" sites never have an answer for this common problem. Quit telling people to buy new drives when you don't know what's wrong. |

This thread was started a while ago, so I had to re-read it to see where anyone suggested a new drive. I seem to have overlooked anyone suggesting this, all I can see is suggestions of software settings changes, not suggestions of buying a new drive. Where possible, we always try to see if there is a software/OS/other hardware cause (in that order!!), before suggesting the OP buys a new drive. In fact, if you read the OP's posts in this thread, you will find that the problem was indeed caused by a software setting. I personally would not suggest dropping a drive into PIO mode though, I'd try and find some other solution first. But each to his/her own, of course.

The only time changing a modern optical drive from DMA to PIO mode would be a good idea, is for those very few drives with buggy firmware than cannot be firmware upgraded while in DMA mode (some NEC/Optiarc drives if I remember correctly). Even on those few drives, the change should only be done temporarily and then the transfer mode should be changed back to DMA mode. When I say "modern drives" I mean anything made in the last 5 years or more. Welcome to the forum!
