Is being MIJ enough to ensure good quality, or should I look elsewhere?

Usually, yes, but I will also say that I have been using these Maxells MIJ for about a year now since I discovered they were in fact Taiyo Yudens.
I have been using TY CDR blanks for about 10 years now as an Audio Engineer, (Microboards usually, but even from Guitar Center they were like 24.99 a 50pk) and the past 2-3 years as a DVD medium. So, go for it, they will definately be more trusty than the Verbatim CDR on the same rack.

Both Maxell-made and TY-made CDRs are great. Maxell made in Japan? Will be one of both, so you can't go wrong!

This said, audio CDRs are generally rated at lower speeds than regular ones, so pay attention to this...

daimyodrum,

How do the Maxell CDs stack up against Sony? I just read that the Sonys are on sale at Staples, which is much more convenient than Sam's.

I don't know if I've ever used Taiyo CDs. I did buy 200 Taiyo DVDs, and the Plextor just will not burn them -- I get errors every time. Then again, I do seem to have a lot of trouble burning DVDs -- sometimes I can burn a dozen in a row with no problems, then I create a dozen coasters. But that's a topic for another section!

Thanks for pointing it out -- I didn't know that. I never could figure out the difference between regular CDs and the ones designated for music.

They're not designed for audio, as a matter of fact (some models are but they're quite expensive), they simply have a code in the ATIP (or something like that) allowing recording in standalone CD recorders, while "regular " CDRs can't be written in standalone CDR recorders. No difference in technology between both.

Now I don't know about these Maxells, if they're audio CDRs or "specially designed for music" (advertised as such)regular CDRs.. without reading the package it's gonna be hard to tell!

Generally speaking, I would prefer a "normal" made in Japan CD-R over an "audio CD-R" made elsewhere.
Better quality disc, better compatibility in car CD players, etc

The photo of the package is so small on the Sam's Club web site, it's impossible to read. The description just reads:

MAXELL
75PK SPINDLE CDR - MUSIC
Item: 252160

No help, I guess. But I do remember the "MIJ" designation on the package.

I'll look around for "normal" MIJ blanks. I checked the Sonys on sale at Staples, but they were all MIT.

Right now I'm using some old Fujifilm MIJ blanks that are so old (I found a couple of boxes of them that I forgot I had) they don't even list a designated speed (either on the packaging or the disks)!

Yesss, unfortunately I found this out when I bought a Sony CD recorder (consumer grade from BB) two years ago. It wouldn't record on my recording studio-standard TY silvers...I practically RAN that *ucker back to BestBuy.
Unfortunately the next best thing was a pro-model Tascam...Three times as much. ah well.

I haven't had any compatability issues with these Maxell TY's, and I hand them out all the time, mix CD's, VCD's, etc. I won't TOUCH made in Taiwan CD's, I thought I could trust Verbatim, but the ones that I got in a 100pk (right below the Maxells at Sam's Club) scanned like shiite.
