There seems to be two versions of Prodisc cakebox for the classic-verbies:
1. one with the slimmer Arial font as cd pirate and kerry 56 have posted
2. one with the bold type Arial font as RJL65 and I have mentioned
Yep, the Neo-Verbs confused matters as to identify the discs. Complicating matters is the fact that CMC and Prodisc now share many of the very same cakeboxes with one another.

At least nowadays, there IS a way to distinguish the Prodisc-made neo-Verbs with the CMC-made neo-Verbs:

The cakeboxes for the Prodisc-made neo-Verbs have their foam spacers exposed, on top of the paper protector label. The CMC-made neo-Verbs, on the other hand, hide the foam spacer underneath the top paper protector label. (This applies only to DVD media.)

I went to the local Sam's Club today and there were plenty of the new Verbatims in stock (100 disc spindles). I noticed that about half of the -R spindles were by CMC and by Prodisc, and the font was what gave it away; the same old rules applied with CMC having the Times New Roman font (but no high lip) and slim Arial for Prodisc. As for the foam spacers, they were on top of the paper protector label on both types.

I have two 100 spindles of MCC004 in the new packaging, CMC on the left and Prodisc on the right. Once again, the font can be used to identify which is which as CMC still uses the TNR font and Prodisc the Arial font. Also, notice the difference in the color of the paper label.

Nice pic, Two Degrees. Interesting how the colour of the label is slightly different. Prodisc seems darker purple. I think this was also the case with the old style packaging.

Yeah, there was a color difference with the old packaging for 16x and 8x. I've even noticed a slight color difference between the older CMC MCC004 (2005 and earlier) and the newer CMC MCC004.

Hi

I've just bought 2 50-pcs. Verbatim DVD-R spindles (w/the new packaging)

- upper side of the box has a thin lip w/arial-font reading
- white foam ring (actually 2 rings) under the paper label on top of the discs
- outer wrap says MIT
- dvd-identifier gives Mitsubishi Chemical Corp. / MCC 03RG20
- disc codes are: 7175E3723-02955E20 and ZD9906-DVR-J47F4

since I got them for a very low price, at least here in Italy (22€ for 100 discs total) I have a few doubts re. these discs

first, are they genuine Verbatim media?

then, since I'm using these for VHS-to-DVD-R transfers (on a rather old Panasonic DMR-E50, burning of course at 1X), would it be a good choice?

thanks in advance

cheers from Italy

Those should be genuine Verbatim made by Prodisc.

If your Panasonic recorder properly supports these discs, then you should be good to go.

I don't know which media is supported by your Panasonic recorder, however.

thanks for the reply

I'm trying to burn one or two of these, let's see if the DMR-E50 likes em - my main concern is whether or not they're expected to be reliable in terms of durability

I'm archiving a lot of old VHS (transferring to DVD-R) and would hate to come up with discs that are perfectly fine now but maybe unreadable/problematic within months, with the VHS gone into the bin in the meanwhile...

Verbatim media should be among the best for longevity.

If your archived tapes are very important, then you should make at least two copies on different types of media to minimize the risk of something bad happening.

One of the copies could be on the Verbatim 16x DVD-R and another copy on different DVD media that your recorder supports (or copied in a pc to another DVD).

I just bought a 50 cakebox pack of +R neo-Verbs for £9.49 which are MIJ. It's clearly written on the shrinkwrap, which helps!

CD/DVD Speed shows MID : YUDEN000 T03 000 (00h)

They have a low-lip lid and the letters ">PP<" imprinted in Aerial font.
No "LOCK" or "OPEN" words.
Circular label is identical to Kerry56 (post #18)

Edit:
Hub code: TH000038
Stamper code: 2C73 9B50 0140 PH

Nice find! Saying that, hope they're a bit better than my old style T03 Verbies...

Guess not, burned 2 of those @ 8 and 12x, the 12x has better pif, but pie is higher than mcc004.

That's not bad at all. Someone mentioned (Rakter?) that 12x was better than 8x when they tried it

The link must be going elsewhere for me, because I would still be happy with my TY Verbage getting 10 times the amount of PIF, and if i could get that number I would be over the moon.

I have as good as written off TY Verbatim media and holding off from ordering from SVP because I cant seem to get MCCxxx Verbatim in the numbers I want, unless I get FF printable.

So it's safe to say we can't identify the manufacturer from the spindle anymore? I just bought a Prodisc-style spindle (Arial font, low lip) with CMC-made (PAPA) discs. No worries though, PAPA aren't too bad

It's not correct.
CMC use both serif and sans-serif font since some time (although it's mostly still serif).
Sans-serif can be Prodisc, or CMC [or MBI although the MBI cakeboxes feel different].
Serif must be CMC [or could be Mitsubishi Singapore, although that's rare].

Based on a few spindles it seems that the arial font CMC are PAP6 and the Times New Roman font are CMC PAPA. And as far as burning the PAPA still seem to be far superior to PAP6 in the 2007 NEO-Verb packaging.

Ye mean Verbatim sells media by CMC MAG and Prodisc in addition to Mitsubishi Chemical Corp?

Oh crap;

I thought that seeing "AZO" on the package meant it was guaranteed MCC? I just ordered a 25 pack of Verbatim DVD+Rs on this basis, without having read an MID (like they show on SVP). I really would like to avoid ending up with CMC MAG DVDs 'cause I have no faith in that manufacturer.

Can anyone help me identify what this:

might be?

What he means is they could be made by CMC, Prodisc or Made in India but the MID is always MCC 004 so not to worry.
