OK, so we all know the old rules for identifying Verbatim media:

25-pack and 50-pack (MIT)

Times Roman Font (Serif) = CMC
Helvetica/Arial Font (Sans Serif) = Prodisc

100-pack (MIT)

High Lip = CMC
Low Lip = Prodisc

And of course, anything Made in India is Moser Baer, and there is no way to tell MAPA from MAP6, or PAPA from PAP6 by the outside of the old packaging.

Clear?

However, the rules changed a bit with the Neo-Verbies, and I'm not sure if we've locked them down in a definitive manner.

Can someone go over the way to tell various kinds of media in the newly designed packages (Neo-Verbies)? I remember that there was even a way to tell whether you were getting MAPA or PAPA CMCs.

The high-lip/low-lip thingy applies to 25/50 packs as well here in Europe

Just mentioned it because I got the impression from negritude's only stating it under the 100-pack heading, that it only applied to the 100 packs.

I bought some "neo" Verbatim lately. Mine are in 50 packs, made in Taiwan with sans-serif font on the lid. The lip is marginally smaller than what I see on my old cakeboxes that were Verbatim CMC made.

So these are Prodisc with this number on the inner hub: 7180E2923+12550E04

Seems to follow the old identification rules fairly well.

No, the lip is superfluous on the 25 and 50-packs because we have the font for identification purposes. I don't mention the lip on the 25 and 50-pack because we don't need it. The reason I mention the lip on the 100-pack is because the font is not a reliable way to differentiate on the 100-pack, so you have to depend on the lip.

In other words, I only mentioned what was absolutely necessary to know. Most people use the font rule, but when you get to the 100-pack, then you're forced to switch over to the lip rule.

Also, the font rule is generally considered to be slightly more infallible than the lip rule, so the guideline is, use the font rule first, but if that fails, then use the lip rule.

Now, can we get back to talking about neo-Verbs?

Not quite that simple. Did you buy +R or -R? I'm pretty sure that there is a way to tell not only Prodisc from CMC, but PAPA from PAP6 and MAPA from MAP6 with -R. Let's get some more input before we jump to conclusions.

And once again, this isn't just about DVD+R. I want to know about DVD-R as well.

I'm pretty sure that code is Prodisc. They are +R by the way...sorry I forgot to put that in there.

Even that is no longer a reliable indicator. In fact, I have a 50-pack of the Neo-Verbatim DVD-Rs with the Sans Serif font on the cakebox lid, and the discs turned out to have codes beginning with MAP6 (CMC).

Nor is Verbatim the only brand whose CMC-made discs have been put into cakeboxes with both Serif and Sans Serif fonts. Other brands, such as Memorex/Imation/TDK, also do the same thing.

Most people will not have a clue about font unless you include pictures.

And there we go. High lip vs. low lip and the two font types shown in great detail. Thanks cd pirate.

I have come across 50-packs of Verbatim with tall tips and Arial fonts. They're CMC ones. Low lips on 50-packs almost certainly still implies Prodisc.

Folks, in this thread we're trying to figure out how the Neo-Verb packages might differ from the old-style Verb packages. In keeping with this, can you please be specific and detailed and say when describing something whether you bought classic Verbs or Neo-Verbs? Was the font on the cakebox regular or bold? Just saying Verbs doesn't help. Thank you.

From what I've seen with the new Verbatim packaging, nothing has changed in terms of identifying whether they are CMC or Prodisc from the old cakeboxes, at least with 50-packs. The CMC-made ones still have the tall lip and the ones I saw still had Times New Roman font.

I agree. There's been no variation from what I can tell.

@ Negritude - what's with calling them Neo-Verbaies? Why not just... new Verbatim

I've just checked my new Verbatim DVD-R cakebox again. The cakebox has a short lip, with Sans Serif fonts -- but as I said earlier in this thread, the discs inside turned out to be MAP6 CMCs.

It's a phrase I coined, inspired by Arachne. Arachne has in the past referred to Verbatim media as "Verbies", so I decided to call the newly redesigned and packaged Verbatims Neo-Verbies.

What can I say? Women have always been my greatest mentors.

Here's a picture of one of my cakeboxes. Doesn't add anything new for identification purposes though. RJL65 has confused matters for the -R disks, but these Prodisc +R's follow the old guidelines.

I'm flattered - but I nicked the "Verbie" thing off jhtalisman, I think it's cute

I have a 50 cake box of 'Neo-Verbies' -R with bold type Arial font that has the MAP6 inside. However, the 100 cake box with the usual Time New Roman font and the rectangle has the MAPA inside. Don't know if it applies to +R as well.

That's exactly what I said in my previous posts about the neo-Verbs (except that I omitted the "bold").

Does the 50-pack of -R Neo-Verbs have a tall or a short lip?

Is the 100-pack Old-Verb or Neo-Verb?

They are all neo-verbies. Both the 50 and 100 cake box have the short lip. I just compare the 50 cake box again with some older Prodisc ones and as RJL65 has posted earlier, they are the same.

There seems to be two versions of Prodisc cakebox for the classic-verbies:
1. one with the slimmer Arial font as cd pirate and kerry 56 have posted
2. one with the bold type Arial font as RJL65 and I have mentioned
