Is Imation Media Any Good?

I thought Imation was a good enough quality "name" brand.

I have a 50-pack of Imation CD-Rs that are labeled for speeds of 1x to 24x.
Whenever I burn a copy of a CD with Nero with these CD-Rs, Nero wants to set the burn speed to maximum, 4x or 1x.

I have to eject the CD-R to set the speed to any other setting, insert the CD-R and then click copy to get it to copy at any other speed.

If I set it to maximum, these CD-Rs ALWAYS fail during the burning process.

I've had success with these CD-Rs at 12x and 8x.

I have other no name brand CD-Rs that work fine.

Thanks

Re: Is Imation Media Any Good?

Could you post the so called "ATIP" information of the discs? If you have Nero installed, just start Nero CD-DVD Speed (under "Nero Toolkit" in your Nero startmenu folder), go to

Extra\Disc Info

and post the result. If you don't have Nero installed, get CD-DVD Speed (freeware) from here.

The problem with Imation, Memorex and similar brands is that you never know what media you actually get for your money. You can either get average / good CMC, Ritek or ProDisc blanks, or horrible InfoDisc or similar crap, depending on your luck.

Are you sure ? There are the well-known Sony and TDK CD-Rs that work fine for most users and burners, actually.

That's right. Very many brands are sold under the Imation or Memorex brands, so it's nearly impossible to guess what brand you will be getting when you go buying your media.

Ok, so Nero tells you max writing speed for that CD-R is 4x and you want to get a higher speed ? At your risk! What are you actually doing is (in my opinion) a trick to make Nero burn media that it rates at 4x-writeable at a higher speed. Assuming that you usually should never burn media at its maximum speed... guess what happens if you burn it at a higher one! (This does not apply to any media; for example, I have had good writing results with Verbatim 48x media burned at 52x).

I think the smartest solution is: buy other media.

Re: Is Imation Media Any Good?

Tyreksionbus,
Maximum was a choice as well as 24x, 4x and 1x if the CD tray was in/loaded.
Id I set the speed before the tray loaded, I could select any speed up to 24x.
I've had success with 12x and 8x.
The disks were labled up to 24x.
Nero claims they are 24x.
I've only had success at 12x and 8x when burning music discs.
CD-Extra disc will burn successfully at only 4x.

packetloss,
Nero cd/dvd speed lists"n/a" for CD speed.
I ran the test and it went ABOVE 16x and down to 11x.

Re: Is Imation Media Any Good?

Imation cdrs... yuk.

They'll burn ok in my old Lite-on Ltr-24102B because that drive was optimised for burning absolute crap media at max speed and is undoubtedly the most media tolerant writer ever made.

I wouldn't dream of using them in any other writer though.

Heh, I have Imation "Made In India" MBI discs. Excellent in my 52327S, but I don't really bother, because we get MBI discs nice and cheap here anyways

Re: Is Imation Media Any Good?

BoSkin, actuallly that's not a "well known fact", Imation is not CMC guaranteed. Imation labels Moser Baer (as Bhairav pointed out) and other stuff as well.

Parato, I don't want to know the specified speed CD-DVD Speed shows, but the media code, something like this:

Code:
Manufacturer : Infodisc
Code : 97m25s35f
Disc Type : CD-R
Usage : General
Recording Layer : Dye Type 5: Short Strategy (Phthalocyanine)
Recording Speed : n/a
Capacity : 79:59.74
                      703 MB
Additional Capacity : n/a
Overburn Capacity : not tested

The first two lines are of interest here. That's an example of very crappy discs btw.

Re: Is Imation Media Any Good?

Umm, are you sure you understood what I wrote before you hit the reply button? Imation CD blanks can be CMC discs, but they can be MBI and other discs as well. It's not guaranteed that you get CMC discs, that's why calling this "a well known fact" is simply wrong, and the link you posted pretty pointless.

I'm not your "m8", and you absolutely make no sense. Congrats.

P.S.: No need to educate me about instantinfo.de, "m8". I think I know that site just a bit longer than you do, "m8".

Re: Is Imation Media Any Good?

It looks like you got a bad batch of CMC discs, not really uncommon. Or your drive simply doesn't like them. But since you haven't mentioned what burner you try to burn these discs with, I can only speculate that a firmware update (if available) might improve the compatibility and therefore burning speed & quality of these discs, because your burner obviously uses the default strategy for 'unknown' discs (limiting the speed to 4x burning without the 'tray trick').

Re: Is Imation Media Any Good?

The TDK CyClone 241040 CD-RW is a Sanyo OEM drive. If you have the latest firmware for that drive already, there is nothing you can do besides burning the discs at lower speed, and avoiding CMC blanks in future, as your drive obviously doesn't seem to like them.

Re: Is Imation Media Any Good?

I didn't think Sanyo made good burneres.
When I got my TDK, it was supposed to be one of the best for getting past protections when used with CloneCD.
Of course, protections change from day to day and my burner is quite old by today's standards.

Thanks for the great info.

I remember reading that some hard to get Kodak Gold Media were the best at most protections. I have never tried them personally but you can search the threads in copy protection and will see lots of talk about them.

Doing a search for Imation you can find Moser Baer and even TY.

Yes, CMC is the most common source of Imation media. No, you never know for sure what you get when you buy Imation.
