Hi, I just upgraded my DVD Burner from my ancient Pioneer DVR-104 to the DVR-112, for more compatibility with discs, and a lot has changed since I bought blank DVD-R's. I recently ran out of my MXL R02 & TY-G02 and burnt thousands of dvds with literally about a handful of coasters.
Now I understand that Maxell has gone to Ritek now for their media, and I'm aware that Verbatim is the best media availiable in stores.. Now I was wondering, how can I find out what media code I am getting by the cakeboxes?
I prefer to use DVD-R because of my old burner and the fact that my PS2 is more compatible with reading them, and I'm hearing that the best media code for Verbatim DVD-R is MCC 03RG20. Does anyone know what the cakebox looks like, or if there is any serial I should jump on or avoid?
Im deathly afraid of CMC media, and I plan to backup my HDD camera videos of my newborn on these DVD-R's. So I cant afford to get left with bad media.
Any help is greatly appreciated.

Thanks a lot.

Where do you live ?
If you live in USA , you can find Verbatim DVD-R media under Verbatim brand and they should be Made In Taiwan , CMC made Verbatims are the best ( MKM in Singapore does not produce SL Verbatim media any more and they outsourced to Prodisc and CMC in Taiwan for Verbatim media production)
When buying Verbatim branded media Made In Taiwan , you are always guaranteed to get MCC code media .
If you live in Europe , Verbatim media that is Made In Japan is always TY , and it should be excellent too , there is always Made In India Verbatims (made by MBI India) and you should avoid them. There is also Made In Taiwan Verbatims in Europe with MCC media code too

Correct. MIT Verbatim 16x -R is MCC03RG20 and it should burn very well in your Pioneer 112 @ 8x and 12x. I'd use it @ 8x for some nice PS2 backups.

Another good verbatim -R media is the 8x discs. They are MCC02RG20 and also should burn very well in your 112 @ 8x or 6x. I use them for my PS2 backups as they are very high quality discs.

Both those media will work quite well in your 112 and PS2.

BTW- CMC made DVD blanks are actually quite good. Their 8x media is extremely good (CMC MAG E01 & CMC MAG AE1). I've had nothing but results that are on par with verbatim. They are often sold under the HP 8x +-R brand. I've heard CMC's 16x discs aren't as good as their 8x discs though, whereas Verbatims 16x discs are great.

Hey guys, thanks for your answers..
I also heard something about the text on the cakeboxes (Times New Roman vs. Arial) and the fact that there are different batches for the fonts.. I was also told to avoid MAP6 and PAP6 codes as well.. Can anyone shed some more light on this ??

I'm not sure you can actually tell which batch you have until you open the box and look and the serial on the disc.

OK so I dont get the two different types of DVD-R media that Verbatim sells.
One is made by prodisc and one is made by CMC, correct?
Which media code is made by each company? and which one is superior?

Yes they are made in different plants. I get good results from both. I wouldn't say one is superior to another as they both work fine.

Some say CMC is better but the difference is marginal.

Both CMC and Prodisc manufacture Verbatim media using Mitsubishi technology and with Mitsubishi media codes, which for 16x DVD-R is MCC 03RG20.

Moser Baer India also manufacture the same media, but they are only recently showing up on the North American market AFAIK, with most Verbatim Single Layer DVD media still being Made in Taiwan.

Personally, I don't think that any of the manufacturers are clearly superior to the others - this is something that varies over time and from batch to batch, although many people here seem to prefer CMC over Prodisc and MBI.

Prodic?

I've only used the +Rs, and they're as good if not a little better than the CMC made ones. But again I think that depends on the batch you get etc.
