FTI (Falcon) Questions

I have been using FTI PRO 8X 3010128504000344 DVD-R

It appears to be in the process if being discontinued.

2 questions:

1. is the 16x that's NOT marked pro that SM & others are now carrying comparable in quality?

2. Does anyone know of a good current source for the 8x pro's? The few I can find on Google either require a 600 piece purchase or are charging ridiculous amounts for shipping.

If they are indeed discontinued, I'd be tempted to buy the 600, but my wallet doesn't agree.

1. No, it is corporate grade. Some folks are happy with it but you would not.
2. no, it looks like 16x only. The pro grade is what you want when it comes to Falcon.
Try ebay but I doubt you will find any 8x. I did see some of the 16x TDK MIUAE inkjet.

Re: FTI (Falcon) Questions

Falcon 8x DVD-R's will always be a little harder to shop for, the Falcon 16x DVD-R are more popular with professionals simply because they burn faster and yield a quality product at a faster production rate.

Sorry, but I don't see them cheaper than about $35.00/$37.00 shipped in 100 quantities for shiny silver/printable. Not cheap. But those scans are pretty nice .

Hmm, I have a local place I can go pick up Falcon 8x media from. You may want to try ordering from them: www.blumediasupply.com

I actually already have them bookmarked,
http://www.bluemediasupply.com/falco...printable.html
& may use them. The shipping is a little higher than I'd like.

Does anyone know where to get any DECENT quality Falcon dvdr's? I've
been using the fine TDK Falcons I got from our own James C. But I'm running low & finally felt the need to order some new ones. Chose Blue Media (best price for 8x since SM stopped carrying them), & got what ended up being TTH1 8X Pros (344's, supposedly the same as SM used to carry; though the label on the tape wrap has gone from Black to Blue).

They're not nearly as good as either the TTH02 TDK's or the older
TTH01's.

Is their qc going downhill, or.......?

Please see attached scans; all 3 of the same source material burned
within 30 minutes of each other under identical conditions.

I made 3 attempts with the new discs, & these first 2 scans were actually the
best of the 3.

Any suggestions? I'd like to see no worse then 95 score/250 pif's total
on average. It's what I've become used to with Falcon's (though I
haven't had new stock TY score that good in quite awhile).

2d worst of the new ones:

Finances are also becoming an issue; I can't afford any more mistakes; especially at today's prices.

Yes, stop worrying about scans that are perfectly fine.

I know there's probably little to no chance of convincing you of this, but I thought I'd give it another shot.

I'm getting gorgeous burns from my blue label 344's. Try flashing your 7200 to any other firmware to clear the OPC and see if that helps. I use 1Z3 with good results.

Though as the others have mentioned, those burns are still quite nice.

There is nothing you could clear on Optiarc drives. They do not keep track of any burns.

hmmm....

I had an odd experience with my 7240-41 drives that led me to a different conclusion. They might give a few very good burns on a particular high quality media. Then the burns would start to slide down into the just-OK range. If I reflashed the firmware, I could count on getting a few more very good burns before they started sliding downhill again. I did this repeatedly, till I finally got sick of it and abandoned the drives. Very odd?

I'm using Liggy/Dee 10bbt on this Optiarc. Again, I'm still getting good burns on older media (see scan #3 on my previous post), it's just that with all my burners most new media seems to suck. I've also had 2 of these new Falcons burn coasters!

I have actually had pretty good luck with SM's TY pro cdr's the last few orders (http://www.supermediastore.com/produ...c-wrap-100pk); but the JVC branded ones suck for me as do the dvdr's.

The reason i care so much about this is because I have had so many discs go bad just sitting on the shelf over time; though I will admit they were mostly lesser regarded brands.

Anyone got any quality NOS media (DVDr or cdr) you'd like to sell?

Just ran into ANOTHER example today of why I'm so paranoid. I''ve slowly been going through a project to re burn all my older cdr's done before I discovered TY & Falcon. Ran across a 10 year old or so TDK (likely Ritek) that's 100% unreadable on all my drives. NO scratches at all on the disc.

Usually I can find some way to recover discs going bad (In addition to 7 drives currently in use on pc's I have a cheap Cyberhome standalone that's amazing at reading dead discs I use as a last resort), but nothing I have will even read the TOC on this one.

That's happened to me at least 20 times on this project; + as I'e mentioned before years ago I bought several cakes of Ricoh Japan Maxell DVDr's. ALL went bad in less then 6 months (the outer half of the dye visibly faded).

Again, i have good reason to be paranoid.

Let me just say this:

You are putting all of your eggs into one basket. You are assuming there is one brand, one manufacturer, that will produce flawless discs that will work 100% of the time and last indefinitely (or, at least, longer than a couple of years).

Let me also say this:

A more productive use of your time might be to get multiple brands across the spectrum, so that if one batch of backups goes bad for one reason, it might be localized to that batch. I mean, look at RITEKG05. You could use a TYG02 strategy and get some seriously attractive burns. Then they deteriorated like no other disc models that we know.

Now, you have other people telling you that these TDK-based discs are likely going to remain a viable source of backup for a while, yet you have concerns that because a disc doesn't score a perfect 100%, it will fail early. Well, if that is your concern, branch out into other brands. TY still makes discs, and as far as I know, their DVDs have not been a cause for concern. MKM DVD media is still the same; it may not scan so very pretty, but if you spread your backups out, you shouldn't have much of a worry. [Also, commercial DVDs don't scan anywhere as nicely, and some of them are good...some are bad. It's hard to predict].

And consider getting another medium. There are actually some really insightful discussions here about using hard drives as backup media. Or a solid-state drive, since flash memory is meant to be quite stable. These are just a few of your options to hedge off any concern you should have about preserving your memories. You just have to find the right way to do this so you can safely *not* be paranoid. Isn't that part of the fun of this all? You back it up, and you forget about it...maybe checking up on your backups every once in a while. Between checkups? Forget about it.

I am getting into both HD & Flash b/up's also. Have so much stuff though, that I need discs too. Especially for cd.

Both are also capable of going bad; but am using both so as you say that should protect me there.

I Just find it so frustrating that disc quality seems to have deteriorated so much in the last 3 years or so.

Wanted to share: I contacted Blue Media with the same 3 scans. They sent it on to FTI, who seem very concerned & after quite a bit of correspondence they used for fact gathering they are going to send me a number of different samples; both already burned for me to scan & blanks for me to try.

I am extremely impressed with FTI on this, & Blue Media also.

Great to hear! I've had the same kind of experience with FTI. Their goal has been to offer the best you can get, and I'm always impressed by how seriously they take their customer's concerns.

Last I heard, they were CMCMAGs. But that was a few months ago. Not sure what they're packaging at the moment .

I just placed an order with WTS (mentioned previously in this thread). They also give a $10 off coupon for your 2nd order.

100 FTI pros $27 delivered on this order, though again, they're not scanning for me as well as stock from a couple years back (and that includes burning the 2 discs back to back on the same burner; the 2 year old TTH02 avgs. 250 PIF's, current stock seems to run 650-750 pifs).
