DVD-RAM PIE/PIF tests

Since the new Lite-On SHM-165P6S can read/write DVD-RAM, and it works with K-Probe, it is possible to do PIE/PIF tests on DVD-RAM media. YSS has put some up on his site: http://homepage2.nifty.com/yss/ram_dqt/ram_dqt_top.htm

Re: DVD-RAM PIE/PIF tests

Thanks for beginning this thread !

Because of some (technical ?) reason I have been unable to start a new thread
I posted here after seing the tests published by YSS:
http://club.cdfreaks.com/showthread....4&page=3&pp=25

I have already a few questions left about these tests:

1- Can these test only be done with this Lite-On SHM-165P6S drive ?
and does it need at least version 4.10 of the DVD Speed software ?

2- The 3 DVD-RAM's where burnt with CD DVD Speed.
Since version 4.xx these "CDS_TEST_B2" burns are done at full 3x or 5x CLV without defect management

3- What is the meaning of PIE/PIF errors on a DVD-RAM ?
Especially in the other case when the DVD-RAM disc is burned with defect management on (case of drag and drop through the Explorer)

4- In the 3rd test the MID code of the Optodisc 3x DVD-RAM is missing:
http://homepaget.nifty.com/yss/ram_dqt/ram_opto3x.htm.
Anyway among DVD-RAM I find it hard to tell who is manufacturing a given MID code ...

Good point.
Question is if it's useful to test a DVD-RAM for PIE/PIF/POF.

Re: DVD-RAM PIE/PIF tests

Here some answers to Franz99's questions:
1. The Toshiba-Samsung SD-M1912 can also do error checking on -RAM but the drive shows so many errors that YSS decided not to test with this drive. Panasonic A10-j can also do error checking on -Ram when using DVDINFOPro (YSS fo unknown reasons did not do this tests).
2. RAM discs are written without verification by burning software. There is no answer to why he did this (could be to check real quality of discs).
3. About the meaning of testing -RAM YSS says that he just testet those without thinking about the meaning (More kind of just for fun thing).
4. It seems that none of the drives or software could give the MID on the OPTODISC -RAM. Same goes with Maxel discs. Panasonic and Maxell produce their -RAM discs in their facilities over here in Japan.

Re: DVD-RAM PIE/PIF tests

The Nec 4550 can also run a disc quality test under CDSpeed on DVD-RAM media.

Which version of firmware do you use for this test? Apparently the I-O DATA v1.26 firmware does not support disc quality test. See the last graph at the following link:

Which version of CDSpeed? I think I've read something about a CDSpeed version thingy for DVD-Ram scanning.

Re: DVD-RAM PIE/PIF tests

Ooops! Looks like I mis-spoke. I have been able to run the "create data disc" test under CDSpeed, but not the "disc quality test". Too many drives, too many parameters, my memory is failing. My apologies for the misinformation.
