| Data Archiving (YouTube Video) Hello Everyone! I have been making CD-R's since 1996, starting with a SCSI 2x burner from Pinnacle ($1,500) and blank media that cost $10 each! Burning, back then, was a religious experience! Going back to some of my older CD-R's to retrieve family photos and audio recordings, I was frustrated to learn that some CD's become unreadable due to the degradation/oxidation of the actual media. In response to this, I filmed an eighteen minute video for my YouTube subscribers entitled "Data Archiving", where I enlighten my subscribers that burned CD's and DVD's are NOT forever (I thought they were), and that hard drives, being mechanical subsystems, will eventually fail as well. In the video, which has a few scattered jokes here and there, I show some of the things I am doing (RAID arrays, VXA Packet tapes, Blu-Ray burner) to protect my data (my iTunes library is over 100 gigs alone!) You can view the movie by going to this link: http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=sYiP47Jy3HA If you are a YouTube member, please log in so you can leave comments and ratings on the video. And, if you like the video, please feel free to subscribe to my channel, which contains a mix of vintage computer tech, some comedy, and music. By the way, I just recently discovered CDFreaks.com -- this is a fantastic site with a great community. I am glad to have signed up to open a dialogue wtih all of you. Thank you for reading this post. Enjoy the video! Regards, Alfred |

| Re: Data Archiving (YouTube Video) Hi Alfred, welcome to CDFreaks! ![]() I watched your video again, and I still think it's a very interesting talk and presentation about backup and archiving, the different types of media and drives, and how to nuke a CD! ![]() Not to mention that it's also entertaining. Thanks for creating it and letting us know about it!

| Re: Data Archiving (YouTube Video) Hi Alfred, welcome to CDF! ![]() Brilliant video ...really interesting and funny (gotta love the microwave bit, although I was disappointed it didn't go off like a firework ). Took me back to the days of my first burner too with the talk about 2x/30-40 minute burns ![]() Date and check your media from time to time, couldn't agree more ![]() Thanks for sharing it with us
