Here is my experience (Memorex media):

You can find my scans here:

Burned on LG GSA 4167B: http://club.cdfreaks.com/showpost.ph...&postcount=127

Burned on Samsung SH-W162C:
http://club.cdfreaks.com/showpost.ph...8&postcount=86

In my opinion this media is generally OK, but it depends which burner You have... I will not recommend this media for sensitive data...

I'm really glad you started this thread, or I wouldn't have realised what a pile of crap my TDK branded CMC MAG M01s were.

At 12x, neither my 4167B or my Litey 1635S liked them...I was so disgusted I didn't even do TRTs.

Here's a taste of my 4167B at 12x - image file burned with CD-DVD Speed.

I've just tried an 8x burn on my Litey, which I've yet to scan. (edit: just scanned the 8x burn, and it's much better).

From the looks of that scan I'd say that it's much more likely that the firmware support for this media in your LG 4167 is bad. See how the PIE/PIF suddenly rises at a calibration point and then suddenly falls again at a later calibration point.

Well spotted, Drage - thanks for pointing that out (I completely missed it)

I've been considering updating to the Hitachi DJ13 firmware anyway, although I doubt that'll help much (other than give me UDMA4 on that drive).

I think my best bet with this media is the 1635S...since it's still getting FW updates, and as I said the 8x Litey burn improved things somewhat.

I've found the M01s don't like 12x and hate 6x (at least on my 160p6s) I get best results at 8x and 16x, and the results are so similar I usually just go with 16x

Only CMC i like is the 2x discs i stock from svp. Now and then i burn some money to see if i am missing something from CMC. Last time was the crappiest Memorex 8x discs. This time i bought the HP printables just for fun - and i'm pretty sure i won't get them again for a long while. I tried the 16x trick bc the 12x attempts i had were pretty awful. I should say they are half decent @ 8x on all my drives but nothing i couldn't get for half the price. Unless requested i won't waste time on QS and TRT for these. For LiteOn & Benq tools were on exept overspeed and i have burned 5 or 6 in each drive so the mid isn't all new to them. Oops forgot to save the Benq scan but it was a coaster. Coasters happens one in 3-4000 for me

[Off-topic]

Just for giggles, I tried CMC MAG. AM3 at 16x in my LG4167B - surprisingly, it didn't do a bad job.

[/off-topic]

Getting back on-topic, I'm gonna try those M01s at 16x, and see if I get a nice surprise.

CJ2, could this be an IDE problem? It seems that the buffer level is fluctuating a lot!

@Hurricane Andrew - that's CMC MAG E01 in your scan, not M01 ...mind you, I went OT mentioning AM3, hehe

Anyway....I got a surprise when I went to burn CMC MAG. M01 at 16x on my 4167B...I'll let the pics speak for themselves, but the resulting scan is somewhat better:

Haha, ain't that the truth

I'm just glad that burner will burn these discs with an acceptable PIF level (even if a burn does take ages)...not a whole mountain of them like I got at 12x

And auto booktyping. But there is some evidence that suggests Hitachi's firmware may have different write strategies from its LG cousins. I recall people reporting entirely different results when using one type of firmware over the other. So it is at least worth a try.

Thankyou for being the bearer of possibly good news

Talking about CMC and the 1650...my 1650 doesn't seem to like the E01 (8x +R). HP branded, too

I just put my NEC 4551 in for the sake of trying them with the M01s....NEC are said to be OK with CMC, so we'll see.
