hello, i'm was looking for a quick answer...
i have -R 8X discs and a LG 4160B
i can't use k-probe, but dvdinfopro says my discs are TYG02.
they look like mirror discs, if that means that you can see a reflection in them, cause in these i can.
i've read in here that mirror discs are for some reason bad. why is this?
i'd like to know if these discs are fake or real Taiyo Yuden.
i got them from blankmedia.ca as it's the only place in canada that i can find.

any help you smart guys can give would be muchly appreciated.

Mirror is a brand, which is what they are referring to. Not a reflection.

Your TY discs from blankmedia are genuine. If you are located in BC, another source for TY DVD is NCIX.com in Vancouver. Check for their weekly specials and compare prices with blankmedia.

Then why are my Office Depot DVD-R 4x discs darker than my TDK DVD-R 8x and Memorex DVD-R 8x. Are Office Depot's offbrand discs of higher quality? They were 1/2 the price, considering also they are 1/2 the speed as well, but still.

I just answered my own questions. I thought TDK's were good, but the one's I have are TTG02 and the Memorex are FujiFilm03 and the Office Depot are RitekG04.

I have these Taiyo Yuden silver thermal 8x DVD+R discs. Are they real? One number says 0901. Another says TG001133. The number nearest to the center of the disc (near the hole) says JH424R04397PG.

Thank you.

yes, those should be real. The S/N is on the reflective part near the center "clear hub" and needs to be viewed from the bottom of the disc (or else it appears backwords. S/N with TG and GG are signs of true TY media (though I suppose this could change).

*sigh* I've been bitten by the Fake TYG02's. These are being sold at Newegg.com as Dupsonic 8x DVD-R's. Consumer beware! They have a media code of TYG02:

Write descriptor to follow:

Media Information
Region information N/A not a DVD-VIDEO

They burn out like some of the other burns seen with 1,200 or more PI Errors. Serial number on the inner hub is E2000408. I've certainly been duped!

Purchase from Meritline / cddvdrmedia.com on Dec. 27, 2004

I purchased the Taiyo Yuden DVD-R47ZZSB8 which you advertised as 8x. It is not. DVD Identifier shows that is 4x. In fact, DVD Identifier displays a warning for 6x+ recording as pasted below. DVDInfo also identifies the discs I received as a 4x write strategy.

You have access to the same info as I, and it is your profession to correctly market the product you sell. Therefore, I must unfortunately assume that this item has been falsely misrepresented.

And I'd assume Meritline would fall in that category as well? As far as places to buy true Taiyo Yuden from...

I only ask because I just ordered 100 of the 8x DVD+R Silver Thermal TY's from them.

sunsocal, if your DVD drive doesn't support TYG02 at 8x, then it's your fault, and not Meritline's. Do you have other TYG02 discs that do supply 8x write descriptors when used in your drive?

My apology for the mis-post if the 4x reading on the 8x TY purchased from Meritline is due to my machine, and not a fake per my 12/30 post. I am new at this. The reasons I thought they were fake:

1) Nowhere on any of the packaging is a country of origin printed.
2) After reading the discs on my machine (2nd DVD Identifier below), I compared the results to the data on the same discs which was listed by Supermediastore (1st DVD Identifier below). Mine showed 4x while supermediastore showed 8x.

My machine is a LITE-ON DVDRW SOHW-812S USB Single Layer 8x +RW/-RW (LaCie). If it is my machine, maybe someone could please help confirm based on the other discs IDs below.

Guys, it's simple. If it's a good brand (EXCEPT Verbatim), really "Made in Japan" and the MID is TYG for -R or YUDEN000T for +R. Then it's genuine TY.

There's no such thing as real and cheap TY, except those which failed the QC ...

These are sold as Budget 1-8x DVD+R and have a red surface with silver writing (No serial printed on them, which is always nice, hehe)
This url is printed in the bottom of the discs: www.01ne.co.uk
I've not made a single bad burn in a pack of 25.. However if movies are burnt at 8x they can stutter a bit on lower brand dvd-player. However they play perfect on my pc.

Burner is a Lite-On 1653
