Avoid DVD-R, most Liteys don't like dash media.
Use... uhh... Taiyo Yuden T02 (8x +R) or Verbatim MCC003 or MCC004 (8x or 16x +R).

I wouldn't use my Lite On for backup at all so i'd say you get an easier and "cheaper" life with a better drive and one that's compatible with better discs

My Liteys tend to do pretty well with - media. Maybe it's a fluke

I'd just like to add that my own Liteys tend to like CMC media (E01, M01, etc).

8x TY media is, at least now, better than 16x is, because of better firmware support.

"Most" Liteys? I don't think that's true anymore.

If you feed the Liteys with quality DVD-R (or DVD+R) media, then you get good results such as this one with Verbatim branded Taiyo Yuden 8x DVD-R (TYG02) - please note the 12x scanning speed!

Why don't you have a look in these two polls about people's preferred media for long-term storage:

Which DVD+R media is best for long-term storage?
Which DVD-R media is best for long-term storage?******** type=text/javascript> vbmenu_register("postmenu_1470055", true);

That's true (*very* nice scan BTW, especially at 12x) - even my 1693S seemed to really like - media (it loved Prodisc F02, for some unknown reason).

If they're listed as YUDEN000 T02 on SVP, there is no issue about where they were made - they will be made in Japan.

And I have bought T02 under the Verbatim brand from SVP, but whether they have any in stock now, I don't know.

I don't think you can find the Verbatim branded 8x Taiyo Yudens anymore, and the unbranded 8x DVD+R Taiyo Yudens are also getting slightly harder to find than before.

So you could buy the printable 8x DVD+R, or the unbranded 8x DVD-R from SVP, or if you have a 5S or 6S series LiteOn drive you could also try the 16x Taiyo Yudens sold as unbranded, Plextor branded, Panasonic branded or Verbatim branded.

Which LiteOn drive do you have?

I don't have a 1633S drive, but from what I have gathered in the LiteOn forum the 3S series drives before the 1673S/1693S are not very good at burning at 16x speed, so you may want to keep your burn speed to 12x and 8x.

It's possible to crossflash your 1633S to a 1653S and it's possible that this will improve your burn quality.

ok, well i ussally burn at 4x anyway for better quality, if i burnt a 16x at 4x would it give the same result as burning a 8x at 4x?

Also would this firmware you suggested help out?

It's wrong to burn at a lower speed.
Discs should be burned at their rated speed (exception: 16x media MAY perform better at 12x or even 8x).

Not always.
What discs did you burn? Brand and preferably mediacode.

Slow speeds = better quality - an ongoing Internet myth (except, as mentioned, in the case of 16x media, where 12x is often the sweet spot).

As mentioned, we need the mediacode and brand of those 8x discs the "burned better at 4x"
