I have no idea, but it looks like your Canon dislikes them if other media works OK.

I can only suggest buying some good quality media (Verbatim, Sony or HP or something).

Welcome to the forum BTW

Is this a 100% sure fact. You know, not being able to see the exact logical processes in passing C1 failures to the C2 correction level, I was never sure about this.

Is an E31 error at the same time really always an E12 (or even E22, E32) error? In other words: Can I say, that E31 erros are E12 (or E22, E32) errors?

You know, not being able to see the exact process in the logic of passing C1 failures to the C2 correction level, I didn't know, if there are E31/E02 errors or not.

So are definitely only E31/E12 (and of course E31/E22 and E31/E32) erros existing?
Well, I guess there's a small chance that three or more errors in a C1 frame are detected (which is C1 uncorrectable) but all those errors are in the parity bytes instead of the data bytes, and when interleaved and passed on to the C2 decoder, no errors are found.

Since there are 24 data bytes and 4 C1 parity bytes in a frame, there's roughly a (4/28)^3 ~ 0.29% probabilty of all the errors being only in the parity bytes and not in the data bytes. So it's possible but rather unlikely that an E31 will not result in E12.

Re: Ativa CD-R(s)

sorry, double post! (for some unknown reason...)

OMG, thanks for the professional explanation! Now I really know everything I wanted to knoe about it. Thanks again!

Well, a drive that reports from E11 to E32 seperatly would be so great. Such high detail wouldn't be 100% necessary, but a very nice tool .
