| These "aging media" discussions depress me. Really. Y'mean, all the marketing hype about optical media being "forever" ain't true? "Oh, Dear Lord, in my lifetime, deliver ONE marketing scheme that is actually true." Holy CRT-Screen-Size-Scams, Batman... Frankly, even a "33 month old" measurement seems thin. We've got fossils that tell us more than some 2-year-old disks! |

| Ritek R01 sold as Verbatim DVD+R 2.4x (so old that they don't even have a speed printed on the discs... I think when they were new, 2.4x was all there was for +Rs). Got them super cheap from blankmedia.ca a few years ago and have been gradually using them up. Burned a week ago at 2.4x on a nearly-as-old but low miles NEC ND-1300 and scanned on my ASUS BW-12B1ST Blu-Ray burner. I scanned at maximum speed which is probably not kosher, but as you can see the burn is still a really decent one.

| Maxell DVD+R 16x (Ritek F16) Burned with Liteon SHW-1635S (using 12x speed) 18 months old burn Sorry, didn't save the initial scans back then. Did scan it though, and back then if PIF exceeded 6, I trashed the disk. Top left: The scan from July (15 months from the burn) Top right: And the scan now - 18 months from the burn Lower left: Sammy doesn't like it either Lower right: Another disc from the same spindle scanned with Samsung SH-202J (19 months old burn) Luckily I only have about 20 discs from this spindle - trashed 20 of them and send ~60 back to Maxell. The replacement spindle has fared much much better, but IIRC from the initial scans, some deterioration has happened (And yes, after that spindle I have saved all the initial scans...) | Maxell 4x Yuden000T01 burned 2005; scan after 7 years 0 months I have some data backups that possibly are older, but here's a DVD film backup I burned in september 2005, on my NEC 3500. Maxell 4x Yuden000T01. Still reads very well, the worsening quality near the end of the disk I blame mostly on the fact that it has not been handled very well (by others than me of course  ) - you know, fingerprints and small scratches.
