Trim WMV file without re-encoding

I need to trim my WMV file without reencoding video (like direct stream mode in VirtualDub). Could anybody advice me software?

Gee DK: Im not sure if you can do that. If you remove little chunks like ad's something has to glue the pieces back together.

Re: Trim WMV file without re-encoding

Ok. I need delete last 20 minutes of 60 minutes clip.
Could you advice me software which can do it without re-encoding (without lost quality, because any reencoding decrease quality and take more time).

Re: Trim WMV file without re-encoding

The FREE Windows Media 9 Encoder has besides the encoder a very useful utility tool that will do what you want called Windows Media File Editor. Basically you will mark in the start point then move to where you want the movie to end and mark out then save and index to a new name. All this without re-encoding

Hope this helps

Re: Trim WMV file without re-encoding

I am switching now to this utility. However might anyone have a better suggestion. I have used WM Recorder till now... very basic and subject to error. It is amazingly difficult to find utilities that do this... I must have tested 20 different programs. Most don't even work, let alone splice without loss.
Windows Media File Editor is also not very friendly... Difficult to use the video window to position in and out frames exactly, unlike say VirtualDub for avi.
Thanks for suggestions

Thanks for posting on this thread. I was having this problem about a half hour before I just happened to read this thread. I hadn't even started searching for solutions yet.

At least one piece, the Windows Media File Editor, works in Vista.

Re: Trim WMV file without re-encoding

The best choice to clip a wmv without re-encoding is Windows Media File Editor. The alternative is Boilsoft Video Splitter.

WMFE is very limited but effective.

As with any compressed video the In and Out points can not be place whererever you want (keyframes and so on). You must let WMFE fix the points.

To mark In and Out points follow this procedure:

- enter an approximate time. for example: 0: 24: 05: 150
- press Play,
- at the desire point , press Pause, press Mark In.
- press Play again, Pause again.
Repeat this steps to Mark Out.

WMFE will freeze if you donĀ“t press Play before and after marking In/out .

I thank you all, specially Chad976zip7

WMFE is great if you only want to remove something at the start and end, but how do I remove a section, or multiple sections from the middle?

I suppose I could break up video in to sections for each trim I make by using multiple copies of the video, but then how do I 'sew' them back together to have one finished video?

any advice?

thanks!

@rabinick
You might try asfbin or maybe AviDemux. WMV support in AviDemux has improved, but it is not a format I use.

There is no way to join windows media clips without reencoding. Avi clips can be joined without reencoding with VirtualDub

Not entirely true.
Of course you can join "windows media files" without re-encoding.
Your second sentence is also not entirely true.

Re: Trim WMV file without re-encoding

Recently, I have found 2 additional options for trimming a video without reencoding.

Easy Video Splitter
http://www.doeasier.org/splitter/
It's free. Did very well with a mpeg file.

Boilsoft Video Splitter
http://www.boilsoft.com/videosplitter/
I splitted an mp4 video.
