Shinking AVI files and converting AVI Files

Hello everyone,

I was hoping someone could help me out. i have 2 questions.

1. I have 2 seasons of a tv show in avi format. i wanted to fit both seasons on the 1 4.7GB disc. Unfortunately all the file are less the 100MB to big to burn to the disc. Is there software that can easily shink all the files a little to fit to 1 disc.

2. I want to convert 1 AVI file to DVD format so i can play on a standard DVD player. Can anyone recommend a good free package.

Buy the original DVDs and then you can rip and compress them to DVD5. Presto.

You know chef, it is entirely possible to capture a couple of seasons of a tv show on your own computer in avi format. There is no need to tell this guy to buy the dvds if this is the case. I have a couple of seasons of Battlestar Gallactica that I have captured. Should I go buy the dvds too?

To the op: There are some free conversion programs, like SUPER and MediaCoder and some free authoring tools like dvdauthorgui, so it is possible to convert avi to mpg2 or dvd format for free. This process takes a bit of learning though and the quality obtained through these tools is not the best available. Look through the conversion programs and guides listed at www.videohelp.com I generally use some fairly expensive programs for this process, so my direct experience may not be too helpful---I use ProCoder2 and DVD Lab Pro. You might consider buying one of the programs from VSO, Nero or Ulead that have all the tools combined. Ulead gets a lot of recommendations around here.

As for compressing your videos, it would help to know which codec you used. AVI is just the container---you can use many different types of codecs in an avi file. Are they Divx, Xvid, HuffyUV or what? You can reencode at a lower bitrate to reduce the size, but you will lose some quality.

It is possible, but the OP didnt mention any of these things...
