As an experiment, I recorded about 1 hour 20 minutes of a sporting event broadcast (which had commercial breaks) from my DVR to my DVD recorder using a DVD+RW. I then finalized it, brought the disk upstairs, and copied the entire Video_TS folder to my hard drive.

I've tried a few different video editing software and the result is the same with each: I selected all the .vobs and chose to combine them. But instead of 1 hour 20 minutes, it shows a length of 2 minutes 20 seconds. It will play fine for about 45 seconds and then skip over who knows how long of video and the audio would sound like a needle stuck in an old record.

Again, this happened with more than one software so there must be something wrong with my approach.

I wish someone knowledgeable here could help me since I am a newbie at video editing.

Thanks in advance.

Will the DVD +RW play on your computer correctly?

If it will then does the ripped VIDEO_TS folder on the hard drive play correctly ?

Hi Cholla:

The answer to both questions is Yes.

But I need some video editing software into which I can load the ripped VIDEO_TS folder to edit out the commercials.

I really hope you or someone else can me some real guidance as to how I can accomplish this.

Thanks.

No I am not familiar with DVDShrink.

But I just tried Video ReDo Plus again and the same thing happened. It showed a total time of 2 minutes 43 seconds and it skipped like crazy (both audio and video) after about 40 seconds.

Again, I am a newbie so please explain more about DVDShrink and also give your opinion as to why Video ReDo Plus is not loading in my .VOBs correctly.

Thanks again.

Have you tried VobMerge to combine the vob files? I have no idea why you are having problems with VideoReDo though, as it has never failed to open a dvd for me.

DVDShrink is a stickler for correct dvd structure. If it will not open the dvd video, you should run the video through FixVTS to see if it will correct the structure.

Both FixVTS and VobMerge can be found at videohelp.com. Click on DVDShrink in the previous paragraph to go to the download for that program here at cdfreaks.

I don't have Video ReDO Plus so I don't know why it's not working.
DVDShrink is older freeware but is capable of doing what you want.
I will see if I can find you a guide for doing what you want with DVDShrink or at least close to what you want to do.
I agree with Kerry56.DVDShrink can be a stickler for correct dvd structure.I use it as a test program for that.

Kerry56:

DVDShrink's website says it is 100% free. Yet when I clicked on download, it required a lifetime purchase of about $50. That is not free!

So I found another place to download DVDShrink for free (but it was dated from 2004). It loaded in the entire 1 hour 20 minute title and seemed to work for the small test I put it through but it creates a separate title at each spot where I eliminated the commercial break. So what I'll eventually wind up with is a DVD-R with about 18 titles. And there is no customization I could find. So I am not overall impressed with DVDShrink even though it did read in the Video_TS folder correctly.

I would really prefer Video ReDo since I read the help pdf and it seems to do everything I would like.

I would love some help on getting Video ReDo plus or Video ReDo TV suite to work for me.

I tried Video ReDo TVSuite again and the same erractic behavior as before. Why can't this software load in my video correctly?

When I click on DVD Title Selector, it shows VTS_01 - PGC 1 with a length of 1:23:07.

But when I click on OK, it loads with a time of 0:02:43.

I wish someone can help me because I would love to use this software.

The download for DVDShrink here at cdfreaks is free. All you had to do was click on the word. Shrink is not an editing program, though it can be used in a lot of different ways. It was one of the finest decryption/compression programs of its time for commercially made dvds, and is still one of the best transcoders available.

Since it can use the dvd you have without issues, I have to assume you are doing something odd when importing the dvd into VideoReDo Plus. So here is the step by step process for importing a dvd into VideoReDo Plus:

*Start VideoReDo.

*Click on Open Video.

*The files type at the bottom of the window should be on Mpeg Streams, not All Files.

*You should now be able to navigate to the area on the hard disk where you have the dvd video files. So, go to the dvd.

*Click on the Video_TS folder to open it. You should now see a list of files with the names VTS_01_1, VTS_01_2, VTS_01_3, etc.

*Click next to the VTS_01_1 file with the left mouse button, hold the left mouse button down, and then drag the cursor downwards. This should highlight all the VTS files shown in the window in blue.

*While they are all still highlighted, click Open. This will give you a pop up message that says: More than one file is being opened. And it gives you a list of three options, Combine, Join or Cancel. Click on Combine.

This should import the dvd into VideoReDo Plus and automatically start the video playing.

Kerry56:

This is exactly what I have been doing with Video ReDo TVSuite. But I found that I had to do an additonal step and that was to use QuickStream Fix. That created an .mpg file and the full title was finally loaded.

Then I proceeding to create my cut list. It was very intuitive and I was able to isolate all the commercial breaks into that cut list.

Now the big problem: When I clicked on "save as", it went way too quickly and the resulting file size was way too small. So I tried "Create DVD" and chose to Author to Video_TS. When I clicked on Author, again it went too fast and the resulting files were way too small. Playing it back on my Cyber DVD Suite, it only played till near the end of the first commercial break. It actually ended before my actual edit.

So I am stumped again. It seems that I cannot create an entire video file containing the whole title with the selections in the "cut list" removed.

I would appreciate further help on this because this appears to be an excellent video editing software.

I guess DVD ReDo Plus would work similar to DVD ReDo TVSuite.

I've never had the TV Suite, so I haven't ever authored a dvd with VideoReDo. I use other software for authoring tasks. The more basic VideoReDo Plus, which I do own and use quite often, doesn't include authoring capability.

You might go to the VideoReDo forums and ask them for some help, since they know the program. http://www.videoredo.net/msgBoard/index.php

You could also look through their guides: http://www.videoredo.net/msgBoard/forumdisplay.php?f=36

Odd that you had to use the QuickStream fix first. There is definitely something different about your original video.

Kerry56:

I realized afterwards that I needed to get a trial period license key in order to have full functionality for the 14 day trial period.

Once I did, I was able to do exactly what I wanted to.

It is possible that the QuickStream fix was necessitated by that fact that my Video_TS folder was from a DVD-RW recorded on a stand-alone DVD recorder.

Anyway, I am now beginning to understand how to use the Video ReDo TVSuite. Editing out commercials is very intuitive and I was able to place the edits in the exact frames I wanted to.

Thanks Kerry and everyone else for your assistance.
