Another SVCD to DVD question + basic menu question

Im going to try the Chicken Man Method next but this is how I did it + the question.

Got multiple SVCD episodes of a series.

Extracted with ISOBUSTER ->Mpgs.

Used SVCD2DVDMPG free version -> separated
video and audio and coverted audio with it.

Dumped all into DVDAuthor TMPGenc.

Output -> VOBs etc

PROBLEM or maybe not a Problem:
--------------------------------------------

SVCD2DVDmpg - has a horiz patch setting
352,480,720 they tell you pick 352 default or 720 if that
doesnt work to fool the authoring programs.

The other setting is 1st header
, entire file, none. Its set to - 1st header.

RESULTS -

a) Set to 720 horiz patch first - SVCD2DVDmpg then DVDauthor

I get a set of VOB and IFO files etc on my HD from DVD author
after. When I try to play the entire "DVD" choosing load files in
POWERDVD before I burn it to test it - the screen seems to be
set to 720 horiz and the herky jerky distorted video is squished off to one side.

When I load a VOB directly - the samething.

b) Redid it with SVCD2DVDMPG 352 horiz

Play the DVD files (the whole conceptual DVD) with POWER DVD -
I get a smaller screen size 352 I imagine with the right side cutoff a bit and blocks of video missing on that side.

When I play the VOBs directly with POWER DVD - everything looks
like it should.

--------------------------------
So before I burn - does it matter I cant play these files correctly
both ways with POWER DVD when I select load DVD ? Or do DVD
hardware players interpret this differently?

Does the fact I get OK video playing the VOB directly with the 352
patch method mean thats the correct way to do it?

Or Do I need to use the 480 setting ? from the start or AFTER
I do the whole conversion to VOBs or what?

MENU question -

In DVD Author -
Tracks and Chapters

Track = WHole disks with chapters as each episode ?
Or Each episode = each track and chapters within
each episode?

And how do you erase already done menu choices in DVDAuthor?
If I change my mind I have to start the whole thing over again since it seems to have no DELETE.

If the playback with PowerDVD is screwed, then you have done something wrong. It should play them fine. Burn the VOBs to a DVDRW to test your DVD Player then your got nothing to loose. Also, just because your DVD Player plays SVCD's okay (on CDR's) doent automatically mean they play when on a DVDR.

Use DVDLab for SVCD authoring anyway, its 100 times easier than svcd2dvdmpeg.

It works perfectly now

I dont want to blame svcd2dvdmpg. That my work. Maybe I just didnt do something right. Part of it was my PC - something was weird . It couldnt read any ripped files on my HD until I rebooted.

After that it could play the whole CD from my HD but it was also
DVDshrink. THat never worked.

Anyway what worked was

1) DVD LAB

2) DVD2ONE to shrink the whole thing since I wanted

13 episodes from the entire sea
son to fit on one DVD-R.

Burned with NERO and everything is perfect.

DVDLAB worked and the menu maker gave me what I think
is more control so I liked it. Maybe Im wrong and dont know how
to work the menu maker properly in DVDAuthor yet.

What I didnt like about DVDlab, and once again this might be
because I dont know what Im doing yet - everything seemed to
take a lot longer to manually do stuff. Like loading up 13 episodes to demux/transcode . A dialog box came up each time after each files was done. The thing about the other two progs - DVD author and svcd2dvdmpg - everything seemed fairly automated. Of course having a template for a menu makes that totally automated and once I get more familiar with DVD lab I might change my tune.

Like I said - maybe svcd2dvd works as well preparing the files
for authoring I dont know. I just dumped all the tools I was using once I had problems.

The real pain in the ass was the menumaker in DVD author and the fact I couldnt open the authored files or run them through the IFO file.

That problem may or may not have been totally DVDSHRINKS+ my PCs fault or who knows maybe it was partially svcd2dvdmpg's fault. However I couldnt open even the DVDLAB output files until I rebooted my PC and then dumped DVDshrink , substituting DVD2ONE instead.

So it seems like a piece of cake if you use

DVDLAB -> DVD2one if you want to shrink it down too.

and maybe

SVCD2DVDmpg -> DVDauthor -> DVD2one

I might test that configuration again when I feel like it.

What DVDshrink kept doing is giving me an error saying
the IFO file didnt point to any video files even after using
IFOEDIT to generate a new set .

Sounds like your system has been screwed up a bit then. Glad your got it all sorted now though.

Shrink might not like the fact that the files are still at SVCD resolution and errors out while DVD2One does not. There is not a lot of difference really in the output of both so go with what ever works for you.

Now Im still having IFOEDIT problems

Now heres the problems I have left. It might be my PC who knows.

I did a check of my two huge hard disks. The D: came up with errors. I fixed that. Thats what was causing some of the weirdness I had earlier. Though as I said DVD lab worked
even then the others didnt.

The problem is some problems persist.
DVD shrink didnt work even after I fixed the HD.

Second IFO edit - the same problems I had before persist.

I recall when I tried it a few weeks ago it seemed to work like a snap. You create Ifos and then they worked.

I have a rip of some VOBs Dreamcatcher.
The IFOs on it dont work. So I erased them and created new IFOs with IFOedit. It seems to work in the prog but the resulting
IFOs still dont work. They seem to point to nothing.

When I play the VOB directly each in POWER DVD they seem
to work fine. Once again maybe my corrupted disk screwed up the VOBs since I ripped them before I fixed it but then why do the VOBs themselves play fine in POWER DVD?

Dont the IFOs just point to the VOBs ?
Ive used the beta and the stable version of IFO.
The samething happened with my SVCD compilation as I posted.
IFOEdit wouldnt work but DVD lab created output with IFOs that
do work.

So now Im trying to dump the vobs directly into DVDLab and compile a DVD. The problem here is - thats easy , they go in
DVD lab but then what?

Theres the window where they list MENUs and MOVIEs for your
compilation. In the movie screen usually you have demuxed the files so you drag and drop video into the movie slot and audio into another.

With VOBs I can drag and drop the VOB into the movie slot but then the audio slot is blank.

Also when I demux I get TWO audio files from the VOB.
Which do I use?

I dont see any simple instructions anywhere.

If worse comes to worse Im going to reintall everything on my HDs and see if that fixes IFO edit etc.

I think you really cant do anything until thats done and all your software is actually working.
