I am running windows xp home edition. But I am having trouble with my taskbar. There are too many tabs on it. I tried to right click and close the toolbars but it didn't work. Then I tried right click - toolbars - and tried to manual remove it but didn't work.

It might be hard to understand my problem so I attached a screen shot. As you can see there are too many tabs on the start taskbar. What can I do to get rid of them. Thanks for all your help.

    right click on the taskbar....
    click on properties
    then click customise

I tried the restore defaults option but nothing changed. Is there somewhere in the registry that I can access to change the taskbar?

Unless you are talented you never want to go there. The best way to do this is to tell windows what to always show or not by clicking each program as Sexy Southerner stated. This is how I did it.

when you click on the task bar and get the menu
there should be a line that says...toolbars>
click on that..and uncheck everything that has a checkmark beside it....
for example...in your photo theres like a begillion marks beside the words the language bar

I tried unchecking everything too. The check marks don't disappear on any of them. They refuse to be removed.

    1. Go to "Start", then "Run"
    2. Type "Regsvr32.exe /u msutb.dll" and press enter
    3. The Language bar will never bother you again!

Tried what you said but it didn't help. If you look at the picture at the the blue taskbar next to the avg you will see a whole bunch of vertical dotted lines that separate the toolbars in the taskbar. Can't seem to get rid of them.

Restart the PC first and start from there (disable language toolbar from the taskbar).

Already restarted several times. I tried clicking each check about a 100 times, none of them disappeared. It is not actually a windows Language bar. The actual windows language bar is called "Language bar" but this one says "The language bar" I think they are different. The actual windows Language bar goes away and reappears correctly when i click it, but "The language bar" doesn't go away even if i click it. Sorry, i know its confusing but trying to explain as best as possible

maybe its spyware? I did a full scan and it didn't find anything.

have you tried going to www.lavasoft.com and downloading 'adaware'? You should also try sexy_southerners suggestion of 'spybot search and destroy'. That will scan your computer for bugs and might fix your problem. It might something your AVG anti virus didnt. Your problem isnt a virus but malware of some sorts.

Can you go to Task Manager (alt-ctrl-del) and take some screenshots in the "Processes" tab to see what might be this bad boy language bar registered as. If we know the "Image Name" we can try to kill the process from Task Manager and trace back to the location of the file in your HDD.
