A small miracle indeed! Used to use WinZip a lot, these days though I prefer WinRAR.

I went to WinRAR some time back. As soon as Niko Mak sold out and the upgrade to WinZIP stopped being free, it was all downhill from there.

Right-click archive + 7-Zip + Extract files puts it in a new folder with the same name. Simple as that and all you'll ever need.

I use WinRAR almost exclusively from my right-click menu. I use PowerDesk Pro as my file manager, and can select the files I want to archive, right click and I'm good to go.

One of the advantages RAR has had over ZIP for a long time was early support for segmented archives. You can decide to have say a 15 meg segment and have it break up a big file into those segments to make it easier for folks to download chunks at a time and then re-assemble them later. Good stuff.

As far as the actual RAR format, I prefer to stick with the ZIP format when creating archives, unless I need to segment things, simply because it is likely to be the most compatible and easier for people to decompress.

I think WinRAR is faster than 7 zip when creating large RAR archives. WinRAR also has a much better UI (or maybe I'm used to it now).

One more for 7-zip here. I just tried and it split a zip archive into volumes with a few mouse clicks! Somehow it took me much longer to do the same in Zip and Rar.

Hmmm. Nobody mentioned that WinRAR can open .ISO files. If it could make and burn .ISO files, I could get rid of a lot of software

LOL. It took them five years.

EDIT: Oh, they have finally released WinZip Self-Extractor 3.0! I loved it a lot some time ago, also used 2.2, 2.1, 2.0 and 1.0 before - but went to IExpress a few years ago as IExpress + .inf files is much nicer, smoother and Microsoft-like.

I just wanted to thank the people that recommended 7-Zip, since i have just tried it out, and imidiately after exiting the program, i went to uninstall WinRAR from my system This app is just awesome, and it always makes me happy whenever i can get to change commercial apps(shareware) out with freeware(LGPL) solutions instead

    Thanks again, mates

Hey, 7Zip is great, but there is no harm in keeping WinRAR on your rig if you paid for it, right?

I just don't like to keep any apps on my system if i know that i will never get to use them again. It's just like when i a couple of weeks ago uninstalled Nero, since i had found a much better(and free) solution in the two great apps: ImgBurn and Burrrn .

It is proprietary and commercial though.
    I would use 7-zip instead.

Yeah, in order to compress using the popular formats (ZIP etc...), you have to buy it.

Who'd want to do that when 7-zip is free?

Yeah! - lets all give Winzip a kicking - for including Unrar support YEARS behind most others.

I used to like Powerarchiver before it went commercial, now my two main ones are:
7-Zip - for the defenitive implementation of 7Z format, and generally the tightest fully ZIP compatible compression.
Tugzip - some say it's bloated and buggy, but never had a problem with it... it can also do 7Z, and open ISO, and Unrar.

Nope - that is one app totally worth paying for. No doubt about it. Pirating that app is just not cool.
