How exactly do you capture it?

I know some are as simple as having the capture software open when you play the audio with your browser...

this is on a Win2K system so software that requires XP/Vista isn't going to work...

What's out there?

What works?

Thank you in advance.

Hey AllanDeGroot; I have a recomendation.I went & tried it on myspace.I'm not sure I tried it on exactly what you are wanting to get but I tried on a band video.
It is Orbit downloader.
http://www.orbitdownloader.com/
Make sure the Grab++ installs with it .
There is a function called Get it also .That works for YouTube but didn't where I tried it on myspace.
The Grab++ did work.
Probably should read the tutorials for it.
On thing I like about it is it grabs two channels of sound.I doubt there always stereo but better than the one chanel a lot of the downloaders grab.
It says it will work on Win2K but I haven't tested that.

For just audio t0nee1 is probably correct on using Audacity.
Wish I had a link to test out.Maybe AllanDeGroot will post one.

the specific pages I'm trying to grab eht audio off of are:

http://www.myspace.com/kevinmatisyn
http://www.myspace.com/evansblue
http://www.myspace.com/parabelle
http://www.myspace.com/32leaves

Some of the tracks have sadly already been pulled.

The first is the original vocalist from Evans Blue
who left the band after a number of tracks
(that now will not be released) were already recorded.
Those songs may someday appear on a solo album or with his new band, but will they be the same?

It's just annoying that I can play it on my computer but
I want to be able to listen where I do most of my listening... while driving.

I tried WM Capture (free off Cnet downloads) but it throws an errod dealing with IP adresses ending in .104 which basically makes it useless.

You should have no probs recording and saving to HDD with Audacity and then burning to disc..I'm just now playing the 2nd wav track(Evansblue) in foobar...

Check your settings..Edit->Preferences, and choose your recording device and set to 2ch stereo recording...
Also in main screen set your input source to either ' LIne In, Aux, What u hear, etc..

Also in the lower left corner I make sure the project rate is set to 44100Hz.That might get set in Preferences but I'm not sure mine has been set that way for a while.

Ok, "Stereo out" isthe only source that delivers ANY audio output to audacity, but it goes from barely audible to oaverdriven off the scale of the "level meters" with even the slightest touch on the level adjustment.

I'm getting my daily dose of screaming frustration but not much else here...

I'm not sure what you mean by "Stereo out"
What version of Audacity are you using?

Version 1.2.6

the selection of "source" in the little drop down window in the middle of the screen.

It was stated as being a "stable" version on the download page.

IMO it's also worthless unless I can find a setting that allows the audio level between silence and overdriven distorsion.

I can sorta get useable audio at an extreemly low level, but that's equally worthless.

You asked for a free proggie and it was recommended...And yes, I know, we're all entitled to our own opinion....Many, many, many users beg to differ with it being "worthless"..Maybe it's your win2k sys that's worthless, for the task...It works perfectly fine on my system(s)...

There is the free version of RealPlayer that allows for streaming media downloading off the net... used to work on the MySpace site, but MySpace has since changed it's streaming format, so RealPlayer probably needs to update eventually to be able to download off of MySpace again..

However...... RealPlayer does still download easily off of AOL Music and YouTube. I was able to pull up a few of the songs you linked on AOL or YouTube, and could easily download the streaming MP3.
AOL is always in full blown stereo... YouTube is hit or miss, many of their streams are in mono, but they have been streaming more & more HQ stereo content...

Worth checking out... easy as heel to use Bro.

RealPlayer_Free

Remember... get the 'FREE' version. You do not need to get the 14 day trial version of the paid version.

EDIT:... Bummewrs... didn't see that reference to relic Win2K... LOL... sorry Bro, you're out of luck.

I have no doubts that it works for others,
but it doesn't work for me...

Nothing against those that recommended it.
It's probably some obscure setting that isn't set right that I can't find.

If it CAN be made to work by changing something I'm open to suggestions

I started the day with a headache, this has merely made the headache worse.

I'm trying to do something that several people have told me is "easy"...
Something people have bbeen telling me for years:
"If you can hear it or watch it on your computer
you can save it to your computer" And at this point I can say "Oh Really?"
I have that one simple goal in mind...

Ok, someone tell me how, I'm all ears....

Just feeling tired and frustrated.

You could try turning down the volume in the app that's playing the stream. If that don't work I'd use TotalRecorder (I know you requested free, and I've been using it so long it might as well be free). It's a 'virtual soundcard' and intercepts the stream just as if it were a soundcard. There may be other driver based recorders out there...

Actually I found three things...

1)Turn the app volume UP
2)input volume to 0.2
Here's the one that confuses me:
3)OUTPUT volume down to 0.1

For some odd reason BOTH volume controls increase audio line in

and lastly the audio files I wanted most and tried FIRST were
the 32 Leaves tracks and those seem to have some sort of bizarre protection... you can play them and record them but when you go into audacity a 4min track diminished to 59seconds
and plays back like an OLD CD player fast forwarding through the track... you get that choppy sampling....
All but one of the 32leaves tracks were that way and the ONE that wasn't was the one I already had off the CD... such is life...

I'll spend more time tweeking the settings, as I got useable tracks but they still have low audio level.

I couldn't increase it in Audacity, but I have other software that'll let me increase the audio level of a wav.

It's all "less than perfect", frankly I think I could get better results by capturing it with an external analog device and convert it back to digital on a subsequent playback.

I'm still very open to suggestions

AllanDeGroot;I will have a better look at what Audacity will do for me.I'm not an expert with it by any means.Probably be over this weekend.
I will be using Vista & I hope it's not a 2k problem.
I also have a couple of programs I got from giveaway of theday I haven't even tried yet so I may do some testing with those too. They wouldn't be free most of the time but I've found software usually repeats at giveaway sooner or later .If one of those seems to work better.
A friend of mine has sound forge which he likes but it is not free.

I did some trying with Audacity & it produced a low quality recording not matter what I did .So I guess to record from myspace it won't do the job.
I did however find a free recorder that will.It imports the recording as a .wav , .mp3 , or wma.I did limited testing but it sounded fairly good .
It said the volume was too high so I turned it down with the Windows Mixer.R click on the tray speaker. At least in Vista.
It is Audio Recorder for Free from.

Yeah, that's pretty much my take on audacity.
It "sorta works", but that isn't enough for me.

If I capture audio I can buy it isn't an issue because eventually
I will buy it, I prefer a physical artifact copy, a CD.
But some stuff is never actually published.

so the online capture is the ONLY option...

AllanDeGroot did you try the Audio Recorder for Free i posted the link to.
I haven't tested it enough to say it's a real good program but I would call the recording it did a lot better than the one Audacity did.

Ah...I´ve arrived kinda late to the debate, but would like to be excused for wanting to add my thoughts.

LOTS of people use and swear by Audacity...including me.
I suspect it has a lot to do with individual set-ups, but I use mine to record online stuff, and to convert audio-cassettes and other analogue sources to WAV and CD. It also took me quite a long time to set mine up and understand how to tweak it where necessary, but once you are over the initial bit it´s all cool.
The results are excellent.

I suggest a bit of perseverance and to read through their forums...

Well he's using Win2k, not sure if that is part of the issue or not, but even on XP, Audacity doesn't seem to bwe able to record in actaul stereo.
If you guys are getting stereo input with Audacity, I'd like to know how.... and I don't mean just setting the input to 2 channel stereo, because it can be set to it but Audacity still records in mono.

RealPlayer, and probably most of the others, records in full blown stereo.... only down side to RealPlayer is that a few sites like MySpace, MTV, & sites like Rhapsody, won't allow RealPlayer to function on their sites... that's where Audaicity would come in handy...IF it could actually record in STEREO
