What ever happened to the old good burning software?

Till a few years ago a lot of software were available. Now they seem all disappeared because Ahead (Nero) and Roxio ( Easy Cd creator) took over!

WinOnCd (old CeQuadrat), bought by Roxio and messed it up
Feurio, no update for the new drivers since 2004
Prassi Ones: disappeared
Plextools: still buggy and very rare update
EZ CD and Record Now by Orlogix… same destiny of WinOnCD, spoiled by the damn Roxio

Other burning software are still surviving but they are not able to offer a good quality. Just for example:
Ashampoo new version cannot still burning audio cd in cd – text mode!

Either they are too basic or they are “invasive”, hungry for resources and trying to do too much not doing one single thing good... and very very buggy!

Is there anyone who knows about a good quality burning software, please?

CDRWIN -Appears to be struggling along.
Nero - Turned into bloatware by Ahead (original developers).


IMGBURN is the defacto burning software for ... well ... everything.
It's small, fantastic, has excellent features out the wahzoo, is free (donations are gratefully appreciated though).

This burnaware does not seem to be bad at all!

It's just missing the A.M.Q.R. burning system... but hopefully in the next version...

Recently I have been making some test using AMQR and is very insteresting especially good in case of scratches and durability.

Talking about C1/C2 errors I got the best result burning audio at 16x, better than AMQR (test made by using Tayio Yuden media and Plextor Premium II driver).

So I wonder if AMQR is a REAL worth burning method.... especially when you have to give up precious minutes of music without any particular quality advantage

i was only referring to the fact the member two degrees was burning AMQR with ImgBurn

as i know nothing about amqr

I sure miss the old versions of Nero. I use to remember when I could download the parts separately, e.g. Nero Burning ROM was a separate package to the Nero Vision, InCD, etc. Also, the Nero Burning ROM download was ~15MB, not several hundred megabytes! I stopped using Nero after version 7 once it started coming bundled with desktop add-ons, toolbars, etc.

The two I mainly use now are ImgBurn and Cheetah Burner.

ImgBurn is a must-have, freeware, a tiny 5MB download and will cover most if not all your data burning needs. E.g. it writes files, songs, disc image files, etc. verifies and can also create images from CD. It also has a very wide range of technical options for those who need control over how it writes to disc, the file system, Interface settings, error handling, etc.

Cheetah Burner is a commercial product (~$20) and also quite compact (<20MB). While it lacks the technical options of ImgBurn, it's the closest I have to what Nero was like and still easier than Windows' own disc burning method. I.e. tiled window for building the compilation, can verify, write to CD, DVD, Blu-ray, etc. including multi-session and can burn MP3s to audio CD & videos as a Video DVD.

Sure if I want to create a sophisticated menu based DVD, edit home movies, etc. I get a video editing package (e.g. Corel VideoStudio.) I shouldn't need to be forced into getting a bloated "all in one" resource-hogging suite if all I want to do is everyday disc burning.

I miss Padus DiscJuggler.........latest version is already 3 years old...
Now THAT was a real burning program,and it could handle most music related tasks very well .....

Yep, Padus used to be my favorite one once I realized all the cool things it could do. I tried em all at some point and eventually got stuck with Nero and Image Burn mostly though I have a few other recoder type ones that end up using Image Burn once they get the disk layout setup.
I'm pretty happy with the latest Nero 10 for overall everything burning but for simple quick burns of most normal tasks you can't beat Image Burn and it's almost idiot proof too with it's asking you then fixing things it sees wrong.
