what is the best ghost / disk image software today

Hello,

I would like to ghost my laptop's harddrive onto a new 7200 rpm harddrive. From reading reviews out there, the latest ghost software, Ghost 10, is not so good and kinda bloated.

Is there a different program you would recommend?

thanks much

Yep, good advice from platinumsword and bigmike. Finally dumped norton last year and while looking for a replacement for ghost, stumbled on Acronis TI at the egg for $30. Been using it for just about a year.
Excellent utility, price and retailer...

The best Ghost is no ghost at all. Anything Norton is trouble. Go for Acronis. You won't be sorry.

Re: what is the best ghost / disk image software today

It used to be Norton for me back when they outsorced their code to a third party vendor, not nowadays, Acronis True Image surely takes the cake. Especially for its current price at only 30bux.

Does Acronis have the cloning function (HDD to HDD, partition to partition etc) like Norton Ghost? And can you backup to an FTP site?

Re: what is the best ghost / disk image software today

Not to hijack the thread or anything, but what proceedure do you guys use to backup to optical disk (cd/dvd) with acronis? I ran into some difficulties when I first tried it. When I tried to restore to a drive that was smaller (because my stupid segate 160 gig is smaller than my hitachi 160 gig), and had to use the resize option, after swapping disks over a dozen times, I gave up (ghost did this same swapping crap sometimes with ntfs backups, having to swap as many as 100 times or more). So then I preraided two drives (was going to run raid anyway), and it said the backup was corupt, though the burn scanned fine and was with good media. I'm just experimenting here with a clean install with basic software installed (to ease future clean installs), so nothing was lost. I guess I'll try diffrent media but does anyone have any good tips for backups to optical with acronis (other than dual backups which is what I will try next)?

Re: what is the best ghost / disk image software today

Yo ripper-

You can use the option to make the backups DVD disc size - so a 15 gb backup fits on like 4 DVD's -eh

To do this - I backed up to a second hard drive - then wrote to the DVD's with Nero - you can also use a packet writing program like InCD to write directly to disc - something I personally have never done-

Me personally - I use an external usb2 harddrive to backup to - makes backup life really more easy-eh!

That is a great idea (writing dvd size images to hard drive then burn with nero). I'll have to try that.

Re: what is the best ghost / disk image software today

Thanks for the info. Buying Acronis shortly.

One last question. Is it true that I would have to have the exact same hardware setup? Say for instance I make a ghost of my laptop, then it gets stolen. Will I be able to reinstate a full disk image on a new computer, or does the new laptop have to be identical to the old one?

Im just asking because Im taking my laptop (for the first time) on a long trip. I got a cable lock for it, but in general have a slight case of the "hebe jebes."

Thanks again.

Yes you should be able to reinstate a full disk image on a new computer.

Re: what is the best ghost / disk image software today

However, keep in mind that most of your chipset drivers will be different, your graphics and audio will different as well, and enough other things will screw you up.

After all that, Microsoft will make you give them a call and explain why you are moving your XP to a new computer.

In other words, you might be able to get it working long enough to get your data transferred and then you will need a clean install, but the new laptop will not really want that as your new computer will have a different version of Windows already.

Count on your backup as a method of retrieving files, but if you go to a new computer it is next to impossible unless all the relative hardware is the same as original.

It should be ok if just the hard disk is different in your machine right? for example your old hd goes bad.

Re: what is the best ghost / disk image software today

Are you saying will a backup work if your hard drive goes bad? Yes it will work. There are no hard drive drivers to worry about (there are ide drivers but thats part of your motherboard and the ide controller or sata if thats what you have). do be aware, acronis likes going to a partition that is as big or larger than the old one. for instance, if your old drive was 300GB with one partition, and the new one was 200GB, it will have to resize when restoring, which takes forever, and if memory serves, I had a problem with it working. If the new drive is as large or larger than the old one, no problem.

Acronis Director Suite 10. It replaces Ghost, Partition Magic, and Drive Washer.

Acronis sucks. It doesn't even support SATA!

Paragon Drive Backup is way better.

Acronis True Image does support SATA drives. Is there a specific problem you're thinking of?

Re: what is the best ghost / disk image software today

I usually hear very good things about Acronis True Image. I don't know about the best, but I'm still using Ghost 8.3 Corporate Edition!!! To be more specific I use ghost32 under BartPE. Using the appropriate switches, I have successfully even imaged a vista partition! If it's working I don't look anywhere else!

There are also freeware alternatives, like Drive Image XML and Macrium Reflect...

Seagate DiscWizard based on Acronis is free to download, it works great and is faster than Ghost.
