If so, should I just install it over 98 or should I do a complete clean install. What steps do I need to do in order to achieve a clean install. Any advice or wisdom is appreciated. Thanks in advance.

Yes, you can upgrade win 98 to xp with the installation cd. This will be I believe slightly quicker than doing a clean installation.

However, I think its best to do a clean install because win 98 uses FAT 32 as its file system, while win xp prefers to use NTFS, which is a lot more stable and reliable than FAT 32, and we all want more stable and reliable machines!!!

If you do an upgrade, win xp will keep the same file system as you previous operating system, in your case it will keep the FAT 32.

In order to do a clean install, all you have to do is insert the cd into you drive, and click install. The next option will be to select either upgrade or clean install, select clean install, and the rest will be to follow the simple on screen instructions.

You've made a wise decision to upgrade from 98 to XP!

just put the xp cd in your cd rom and and restart your machine most compaq's automatically boot from the cd rom so you probably wont have to change the boot sequence in the bios.

there are a lot of people who would dis agree and i am one of them for now.i will not argue that xp is a good os but the self reboots are a pain in the arse. Until ms pulls their finger out you will get less errors with 98 than xp. win 2000 would be a better option as well.

There are some programs, however, that require reinstalling after upgrading. (they should work without, but are known to give errors if you don't reinstall)

This is more of a software question, so I moved it.

Code:
1. I use win98 on daily base, winxp only for burning and Internet
since win 98 has more compatibility and faster even on
256 MB ram, while some burning program need NT engine.

2. As I Recall FAT 16/32 convert-able to NTFS in single boot,
just like converting FAT 16 to FAT 32. However once converted
to NTFS only Re partitioning will be able to bring back to FAT.

3. My XP run on FAT32 since when things goes wrong its accessible
though DOS, FAT 32 has no RollBack like NTFS but when things
going wrong at least I can get c.a. 75 - 80 % of my file back.
Think if you have to do this on NTFS

4. Clean install on other partition is the wisest choice.
To create multiple partition:
Code:
Partition Manager (Part.exe)
        Create/delete many partition
        primary or Extended. (FreeWare)

Partition Resizer (Presizer.exe)
        Resize any FAT(s) partition
        and move any Non-FAT
        partition. (FreeWare)

They are Free, Easy to use, and simple yet Very Powerful

Clean installs are always better.

Well steps for the CLEAN upgrade:

1. Backup your data

2. Insert the Win XP CD & boot from the CD

3. Select the HDD for installing the OS.

4. You will be given options to format & convert to NTFS & other options.

5. Select NTFS option & donot select the FAST option to NTFS.

6. Go on & voilla! you have CLEAN installed XP.

If you have a high end system there is really no point to having an old os like 98. I've dualbooted for a long time, still do, and the more I boot my computer, the less I boot into my first partition with 98 on it. In fact, the last time I actually used my 98 part was when I wanted to evaluate my partition status.

You can always get programs that allow you to access ntfs partitions from a dos environment and when you partition about 5 times and put an os on one, and if you os fails just delete partition and reinstall without losing personal data (that is of course if you saved it to your other partitions and just keep backups of that personal unreplaceable data) and that's a nobrainer.

Once you use xp with a fast computer, why go back to 98? (I can see an exception with lombok ijo because of his computer specs and I wouldn't bother with such a low processor speed unless you needed it i.e. burning progs

Thanks for all your advice. Another question. If I do a clean install does it erase the whole hard drive or just replace Windows 98 with Windows XP?

Clean install presumes erasing the whole HDD.

Otherwise you can delete the Windows 98 folder & then install XP if your donot wish to erase your HDD.

it's always good to know you can upgrade from 98,2k up to xp without a hitch (unless you have some hardware that's not digitally signed) but ive upgraded about 10 of my friends and nobody has had a problem. personally, i like a fresh install on a partition about 2.5 to 3 gigs and then leave another partition for installing all my progs and personal data.
there are ways to do a clean install like i did, make a small 500 meg partition, install win98 on it with a partition manager, then make a 3 gig one and install xp fresh on it (you have to do custom install) and then the ntbootloader will configure with the 98 as well to boot into it. then have another partition (ie the rest of your hdd) for data. this is by far the best configuration i've used and i've stuck with it since my previous computer
