Norton Ghost Bootable CD ?

Hello Folks,

My daughter is anticipating on purchasing a Laptop computer. The laptop computer does not have a floppy disk drive.

I want to make a Ghost Image of the computer hard drive while the new Laptop computer is in a pristine stated before any software other then original software is installed.

I have a copy of Symantec Norton Ghost Corporate Edition v8.0. I have always used Norton Ghost via floppy disk to make Norton Ghost Images. Since the Laptop computer does not have a floppy drive I need to use a Norton Ghost bootable CD. I have checked the Symantec Norton Ghost Corporate Edition v8.0 Ghost Boot Wizard and it only provides for making Norton Ghost Boot disk on floppy disks and does not have provisions making a Norton Ghost bootable CD.

Is there anyway of using Symantec Norton Ghost Corporate Edition v8.0 to make a Norton Ghost bootable CD. If not what version of Symantec Norton Ghost allows making a bootable Norton Ghost CD.

Best Regards,
bjkg

Re: Norton Ghost Bootable CD ?

You can do an boot disc with Nero.

Put the Norton Ghost floppy disc in your floppy drive and make a bootable cd.

You do have a PC with a floppy drive.

Re: Norton Ghost Bootable CD ?

@ jbv,

Thank you for your response. I tried your suggestion of using Nero Burning ROM and making a Bootable CD from the Norton Ghost floppy disk but unfortunately that did not work correctly.

The Bootable CD I made of the Norton Ghost bootable floppy disk will boot correctly to a point but there is some type of error in the execution of AutoExec.Bat file. The Norton Ghost is on two bootable floppy disk. When I made the Norton Ghost Bootable CD with Nero Burning ROM I copied the two Norton Ghost bootable floppy disk to the CD. As stated the Norton Ghost Bootable CD I made will boot and the Norton Ghost files start to load to a point but then stops and asks to install the second floppy disk. I am sure it is just a matter of simply editing the AutoExec.Bat file in the proper manner. I am unaware of the how to edit the AutoExec.Bat file command lines in the proper manner so that the Norton Ghost Bootable CD does not stop ask to install the second floppy disk.

Perchance if I posted a copy of the Norton Ghost floppy disk AutoExec.Bat file could a Forum Member knowledgeable in DOS batch file writing and editing review the Norton Ghost floppy disk AutoExec.Bat file and inform me of what command lines need to be modified and edited to allow the Norton Ghost Bootable CD to execute properly? My DOS batch file editing skills are extremely limited. Below is a copy of the subject AutoExec.Bat file.

@echo off
SET TZ=GHO+06:00
MOUSE.COM
CLS
LH \MSCDEX.EXE /D:cd1 /D:cd2 /D:cd3
echo Loading...
if %config% == FROMFLPY goto FLPYBOOT
if %config% == FROMCD goto CDBOOT

goto FAILED

:FLPYBOOT
echo Insert Ghost boot disk 2 (containing Ghost.exe)
pause
if exist a:\ghost\ghost.exe goto GHOSTFND
goto FLPYBOOT

:CDBOOT
echo Insert Ghost boot disk 2 (containing Ghost.exe)
echo To run Ghost.exe from a hard disk or CD, press Ctrl-C at the following prompt
echo then change to the appropriate drive letter and type 'Ghost'
pause
if not exist b:\ghost\ghost.exe goto CDBOOT
b:
goto GHOSTFND

:GHOSTFND
cd \ghost
echo Loading...
GHOST.EXE -forceusb -force1394
goto END

:FAILED
echo Unknown boot menu selection
goto END

:END

I hope that a Forum Member knowledgeable in DOS batch file writing and editing will be able to understand what command lines need to edited and modified to enable the Norton Ghost Bootable CD to execute properly.

Best Regards,
bjkg

Re: Norton Ghost Bootable CD ?

If Ghost 8.0 is anything like Ghost 2003, I beleive in that 2 disc boot floppy set from Ghost ... the 2nd disc is just the Ghost.exe in a folder called 'Ghost'. It's been a while since i've used Ghost, but you might try doing what you did but adding the Ghost.exe in the root directory of the cd/dvd in a folder called "Ghost". I believe that's what it is looking for in the autoexec.bat.

Btw ... have you tried letting Ghost 8.0 burn directly to a disc? I believe it does make the disc bootable when it burns directly to it. I could be wrong.

Re: Norton Ghost Bootable CD ?

When your mouse driver initialise it try to write to an mouse.ini file. Which it can't because it's a cd-r and not a floppy.

I use gmouse.com from Genius, with no problems.

Make a 'Standard Ghost Boot Disc', which will fit at one floppy.

'CD/DVD Startup disc with Ghost' take two floppy's and not one like the above.

Re: Norton Ghost Bootable CD ?

Laptop computers now all come with a cd (but more often a DVD) that includes windows and all programs needed by the computer to run. You just pop it in and it restores the partition, much like Norton Ghost.
Still, if you are a tinkerer who doesn't like factory un-tweaked installations, I suggest using Ghost 4 Linux (also known as g4l) in place of Norton Ghost. It comes in a cd image, so you don't have to worry about booting, and it doesn't require you to be a Linux user to run it effectively.
The only gripe I have with it so far is that sometimes it has trouble with NTFS partitions, but hopefully the new versions don't have that problem.

If you really want to use Norton Ghost, I suppose you can find boot cd images online somewhere; someone's bound to have solved this problem before.
