ok i would like to network a windows xp pro computer to a windows 98 (NOT second edition- it's first edition) computer

the windows 98 computer also currently has a cable modem that is plugged into a USB port

all i want to do is be able to transfer files from one computer to another... if the internet is transfered that is also fine but not necessary

i installed a network card that i brought over to his house, and have a hub (and a cd for drivers if needed)

basically i was going to run the "Set up a home or small office network" wizard on the xp cd (on the 98 comp) but i am worried that it will remove the cable internet ( i know 98 is a DUMB OS)

if it is ok for me to run this wizard (and it will allow me to network the comps) plz tell me.... also if it is not ok (it wont work or it will break the cable or something) plz tell me whats wrong and what i should do

another thing- i currently have the xp pro comp networked to a 2000 pro comp in my house... i want to physically move the xp comp and network hub to the other house (disconnect the 2000 computer) and make a temp network with the 98 comp< so i actually have some network experience, and allready have one set up >

thx alot!!!

You don't really need to run the wizard. And I'm not sure exactly what it does but since you have some network experience I'd guess you just have to make sure everything is setup right on the 98 machine like TCP/IP protocol installed and ms filesharing and IP settings (dhcp/fixed).

I don't remember that well but right click on network neigbourhood and select properties and on one of the tabs there should be a button called install or something similar click it an choose tcp/ip

Ok these posts are similiar and you really didnt need to start a
new post.

in win98 right click on network neighborhood, go to properties,
configuration, double clik on tcp/ip.

I think its the same under XP or close to it.
