BitTorrent publishes new 'Share' app that ignores file size

Looming anti-piracy bills haven't stopped peer-to-peer protocol innovation. If anything, they may have spurred it. The popular file-sharing company BitTorrent has released an alpha version of a new app it believes will make the entire process quicker and easier than traditional methods.

Share (its working title) is the antithesis of complex FTP services and costly cloud space, the company said. Instead of forcing users to fuss over how to send larger files to friends and family, the free app does away with size limits completely.

According to BitTorrent Chief Strategist Shahi Ghanem, the new tool is the result of more than a year's worth of research and work by μTorrent engineers.

"With Share, you don't have to crop photos, reduce resolutions or cut video length to easily share something with your friends, family and colleagues," he explained. "It's much faster than traditional 'cloud' solutions and easy for anyone."

Ghanem added that Share's roots are in last May's Project Chrysalis beta, which itself aimed to streamline file-sharing. The first shot was a miss, he admitted, but helped lay the groundwork for the new Share model.

"After evaluating the user response and feedback, we realized we had the right goal, but users identified challenges with the implementation," Ghanem said. "Ultimately, we took what we learned and started again from scratch. Share was born."
