Great link. I haven't updated to SP2 yet. I guess I'm putting off the inevitable.

If the picture and fax viewer can be protted over to 2k, I would switch. I actually like 2k much more. I can't believe 2k costs more than XP...heh

Re: LOL Hell of a list for SP2

most of the problems listed are because of the built in firewall. Heck if you had a 3rd party firewall you would probably have the same problems as the built in firewall.

Re: LOL Hell of a list for SP2

I decided to take the plunge and install SP2 about 2 hours ago. I haven't had any problems so far but 2 hours is not really enough time for anything to really happen...at least for me Been playing Virtual Pool 3 pretty much and it has been working fine though, I did notice that when I opened Nero, it came up with a dialog box that mentioned that the software has known compatability issues with this version of Windows. Yet, I burned a slipstreamed Windows XP Home/SP2 cd and it worked fine. I am using Nero 6.3.0.0.

Also, Fileplanet has SP2 available for download if anyone is still looking for it.

Re: LOL Hell of a list for SP2

you can download sp2 directly off microsoft's site

http://go.microsoft.com/?LinkID=806688

no need to go to a 3rd party source

Re: LOL Hell of a list for SP2

I think out of that whole list of programs that may not work correctly, I only have about 2 on the list. So I guess I am not too upset.

Re: LOL Hell of a list for SP2

I guess installing SP2 would qualify as a "security fix" as everything else on your system is now broke so no need to have the machine on...

Re: LOL Hell of a list for SP2

the list of programs causing errors is trash...
look, even outlook 2003 is on it - i just can say, i am using many different programs and none of 'em fail to work...
what ms set up on this list, is even if a program that tries to communicate over lan / internet and is propably blocked by the firewall...
so, this list is not to be taken too important, if anyone could do a list telling WHAT exactly is working incorrect, this would be cool...

Re: LOL Hell of a list for SP2

Microsoft lately (since 2002) have been more focused on security/performance rather than compatibility. Look at XP release -- they completely flipped off all norton AVs pre-2002, but made one of the most stable operating systems around for the compatible programs. Look at Windows 98, almost all the bluescreens (on computers which don't have a blown stick of RAM, or too little Virtual Memory -- for which is user error) are caused by the 16/32bit crossovers and having to spend ~6-7 mb of space (most computers only having 16-32mb of RAM at the time) to load programs with only half of the space required -- while the Kernel is probably larger in Windows XP, the space is used for better things, while 16 bit is emulated by the console application which can be turned off when not in use -- unfortunately the emulation isn't as good as the original 16 bit kernel which is why many DOS programs don't work, etc. So Windows XP fixes the 16/32 bit issue which cuts back SO many BSOD's, and also worked on the other areas including the blown RAM issue ("Error reading/write memory ad block 0x<blah> terminating program" is a BSOD for XP, only they localized it to only the infringing program instead of the entire system, and unresponsive programs is the Virtual Memory issue I was talking about -- Windows XP scored 3 big hits in that department, and those who whine saying there shouldn't be any errors and it should let the programs go even if you can't read/write one block of RAM: When it can't dump info to RAM, it tries to dump it to the Harddrive, when that's full (which is why you shouldn't leave less than 15% HDD space remaining in Win98) it will try to overwrite information already emplaced -- which is why windows Bluescreens -- to prevent data corruption, partial/complete overwriting of files with program wasted 0's/1's Because to be honest, what's more important to you? Your taxes or 1/7th of your taxes and about 100mb of directX9 3d data travelling from your processor to your videocard?

The days of Microsoft frigging up on programs are over for now -- they've been making a large number of great programs, the only issues I can understand are with the software devs and the hardware companies (good example is the memo sent to NVidia, Ati, etc. telling them what their drivers need else Longhorn will bankrupt them.) But to the end user -- note that if you have 2 billion lines of code, you're bound to make at least 10million errors no matter how good of a coder you are -- and the fact that they pay their staff (not cheaply) to consistantly repair the works for monthly (2nd tuesday of the month) patches to try and shake their reputation is a very honorable thing. Which is very funny -- it seems as though every major political hypocracy/multinational issue that happens in the US -- one company's name pops up (or the name of one of their subsidiary companies) -- and that name is NOT Microsoft. Compared to GE, MS are angels. (Something just creaps me out when a weapons manufacture who gets multi-billion contracts to clean up after wars which their weapons were bought to fight in gets the ability to REPORT on the war and sway the public opinion by telling half-stories (or less) simply because they're the target de jour for public fear.

Buttttt politics on the internet always degenerate to flamefests -- so that's enough of that. Yeah, Microsoft isn't as bad as people think -- sure they're not the best company, but there are companies controlling abusing our lives, not just our 400$ Operating systems.

Re: LOL Hell of a list for SP2

Ouch. That's quite a list. While it doesn't mean that every single listed app will crash immediately, I wonder how many people will choose to disable all the new security features to avoid problems from DEP and the firewall (application breakage extraordinaire unless you maintain them for a living). I'm running win2k myself and I hope they don't slip any similar features. I really don't like MS's tendency towards really heavy-handed fixes.

Exactly right! it's a list that was made from the beta's and release candidates of sp2 not the final product.
