Any Linux build you go with will have a way to clear it (format it) via ext2 or ext3 depending on which one you use, whether it be Suse, redhat, mandrake, backtrack, or the more recent popular Knoppix or Ubuntu so you need not worry about prepping it.

When you first install any linux distro, it will fire up Gparted & ask you how you want to partition it.

As a minimum, I'd recommend 3 partitions .. swap, "/" and /home.
If your OS gets pooched for any reason, it won't affect your documents and settings on /home

10GB should be more than enough for any "/" unless you are an serious experimenter.
2GB should be ample for swap .. the rest can be for your own stuff
