Re: how to merge word files

Maybe a bit boring procedure, but you can simply open the first one, then open the second one, select all, go to the end of the first document and paste the content, then open the third file, again select all, and copy/paste at the end of the first and so on...

Alternatively you can use the following procedure:
  1. Open a document.
  2. On the Tools menu, click Compare and Merge Documents.
  3. Select the document that you want to compare to the copy that is currently open.
  4. Click the arrow next to Merge, and then do one of the following:
    • To display the results of the comparison in the selected document, click Merge.
    • To display the results in the document that is currently open, click Merge into current document.
    • To display the results in a new document, click Merge into new document.

More detailed information can be found pressing F1 and searching in the help file for Compare and merge documents

Re: how to merge word files

open first go to the end
open next press ctrl A and then press ctrl v in the first document
keep doing it till u finish
After that install a free pdf printer( such as pdf 995) and print the final doc to it

Re: how to merge word files

Hi everyone
I have a similar problem. I have to merge 10 or so word documents to make a final document. A user may have to do this all the time. So I would like to give him a choice as to what documents he/she is merging (may be in the form of a check list??). Any ideas as to how to do this? Do I have to use a template??? I am using microsoft word 2003 btw.

thanks in advance.

Re: how to merge word files

Hi thanks for that.. But I have already tried that and it works. However, I want to do sth more complex like.. I want to create a template or a word document which can prompt the user of the various documents he/she wants to add, in the form of a checklist or sth and then merge them in to the document with proper numbering and format adjustments done. Any ideas??

Re: how to merge word files

Hi thanks for the zip file. I think thats what I want. I tried to do what is said in the readme file. But I am stuck at a point and dont know what to do.
This is the part:

Using the add-in
When correctly installed, the add-in will be listed and checked in tools > templates and add-ins.

The add-in provides an additional toobar called Boiler which should be displayed by default, but if it isn’t select View > Toolbars and check the Boiler entry.

I do get an addin in the tools>templates and add-ins.
But -- Problem is that I dont have an additional toolbar called boiler. It isnt there even in view>toolbars. What should I do now.
Thanks for the help!!!

Re: how to merge word files

I think you must apply the template first to a document, to see the toolbar.

Re: how to merge word files

Hi

Yea Now I have the boiler thing in the view>toolbars. When I click on it a new toolbar appears with just one button appears - start boiler and when I click on i get an error -

The macro cannot be found or has been disabled because of your macro security settings.

I changed the macro security level to low and I still get the same error.

Also when I go tools>templates and add Ins I still cant see the boiler.dot under the Global Templates and add Ins checked items are currently loaded---but nothing is present there.

What do I do. I am stuck. Plz help. Thanks..

Re: how to merge word files

It's still a macro security issue. Tinker with it, till you get it right (there's a setting under Trusted Publishers in Macro Security, namely: trust all installed macros&add-ons). Otherwise, no ideas....

if anyone interested, I could use the macro. Just add it to your macros folder, bring your security to medium and run it. It will work.

Re: how to merge word files

Hello,

I was wondering if either the macro or the "Combine" tool are a way around loosing the track changes of different reviewers when you merge word documents?

Really, no idea... Why don't you make a small batch try and see what happens? Then let us know how you did?

If you work with Word documents often, there has probably come a time when you had to merge multiple Word documents into one master file. Unfortunately, Word does not have a simple Import/Export function to combine multiple documents into one.

Instead to merge Word documents, you have to go to the Insert tab.

Now find the Object drop-down and click on the small arrow to the right of it. You’ll get an option for Object and Text from File. Choose the latter.

Now you can go ahead and select as many Word documents that you want to combine into the current document. You can press the Ctrl key or Shift key to select more than one file.

Note that the top file that you select will be merged first, so if there is an order that you want to maintain, make sure to rename the files first so that the appear in order in the dialog box.

Now just click Insert and all of the documents will be combined into a single doc file. You can also click on the small arrow next to Insert and choose Insert as Link if you want it to simply point to the other documents instead of being incorporated.

Note that when you merge Word documents, the formatting does not always remain. It’s very annoying, but there’s not much that can be done other than manually fixing it or copying and pasting the improperly formatted sections in.
