HDD check utility

Hello!

I am searching for a tool to check my hdd - I think that some sectors are defective. It should run under Dos, Win 95 or 98.
Oh, and please don't say scandisk...( or is it ok ? )

TIA

Have you tried in the dos prompt typing in 'chkdsk /f'?

Is that only good with Seagate drives? Can it be used with Western Digital or Samsung or Maxtor?

PowerMax 4.06

PowerMax
Quote:
The PowerMax utility is designed to perform diagnostic read/write verifications on Maxtor and Quantum hard drives. These tests will determine hard drive integrity. The PowerMax utility is effective on all ATA (IDE) hard drives with a capacity greater than or equal to 500 MB. Maxtor recommends the use of this utility for troubleshooting potential hard drive problems. These problems include, but are not limited to the following:

- Potential hard drive surface problems (e.g., bad clusters, bad sectors, partitioning/formatting problems, etc.).
- Drive recognition problems (e.g. hard drive that is not recognized by the operating system).
- Software removal.

Since Maxtor bought out Seagate the Seagate tools works with Maxtor and Seagate drives. Western digital has its own tools.

Essentially these tools are all rip offs of each other and test the drives in the same manner.
The tools all use Dr. Caledra DOS software.

They would probably also be reliable enough to test other drives.

it will do deep scan for defect, SMART error etc...
old Quantum Disk Checking software is indeed an ONTRACK
