I'm going to have to load WP 5.1 on it and check out the speed. The Compaq 296/SLT lets me start it up, type a 2 paragraph letter, and send it to the printer in 1min 24sec. From turn-on switch to the sound of the lovely rat-a-tat-tat of the Okidata.

With SSDs and a Z77 board, surely, I can accomplish that. Oh wait - without a keyboard, though... hmmm... I sure hope these touchscreens allow about a 100wpm typing speeds, eh? yeah... riiight... I'm thinking of all those retail bar-coders that can't read on first-pass. "Who's typing AND eating guacamole at the same time?"

That German Opa... I can't get that skit outta my head.

Of course, the article is comparing Win8 to 7... not to DOS and WP 5.1... yeah, there's always a catch...

All we need now is Windows 8 on MacBook Pro Retina. Apple has just released Mountain Lion update (OS X v10.8) as well.

Umm, these numbers mean nothing without showing what resolutions they are using.. 800x600 doesn't matter.. it's the HD resolutions which will mean something.. typically the higher resolution you go the slower the graphics performance & frame rate.. so, starting @ 1080p 1920 x 1080(1024?) and going up.. how fast are the max frame rates in stock (non OC'd)?

with true stats, then you can compare apples to apples..

I wonder if I can install DOS on an ASROCK Z77 Extreme 6? I should try that when we get home... the "no IDE connector" might be a problem, but maybe the BIOS' "Handle SATA as IDE" will work.

There's a ASROCK AMD that has an IDE and FDD conector set... add in a AM3+ 4170 (4.2Gz)...

DOS 6.11... QEMM's memory manager. Maybe I can hit 618k of avail memory? Ya think? WP 5.1. XTREE GOLD, my old friend!!

OK, yes, I'm bored...just sitting here waiting for Hubby to start getting quiche ready...

It was frustrating enough for me to use DOS and Windows 3.1 and Windows 95... on the latest hardware a few years ago. It's relatively easy to find all the ancient operating systems, but using them on recent hardware is not.

Hubby corrects me. "Remember - we're talking a gigabyte stick of memory - not a megabyte."

Oh. Oh yeah.

Well, it should be an interesting experiment at least.

So... if I can find one of those old AST boxes and get the 256k stick out of it, can I use peanut butter to fill up the DDR3 slot? Crunchy or Smooth? Gee, I wonder if the RMA folks would notice?

Or wait - duct tape, anyone?

They are paid exactly to notice such differences.

Our office gurus confirm that Win8 offers speed improvements in just about every Actual-Use situation for our variety of software packages. However, some still don't match those packages' speed in XP, and all of the Win8s consume more resources than the XP-versions' resources did.

It is interesting to see MS go from the ultra-glitzy 3D-smoky shadows of Vista-Win7 displays into this flat Metro style. (And yes, I ranted against the ultra-glitzy themes, too - "I don't want to waste time looking at the OS effects - I want to waste time on MY work!")

In that argument, I have some appreciation for Metro. Just as long as I can customize MY desktop the way I want it - MY toolbars in MY locations. Not Ballmer's choices. Not Job's.
