Samsung, LG show off new LED-backlit HDTVs

Two major TV manufacturers recently showed off LED-backlit HDTV models, as they prepare for a shift in consumer HDTV demand, possibly leaving behind aging technology for the more appealing LED-backlit TVs.

Samsung recently showed off its 8500 LED HDTV series, though the TVs aren't for consumers unwilling to spend some serious cash.

The series, available in 46" or 55" models, offer 1920x1080 pixel panels, 2ms response time, and 200Hz processing, according to Samsung spec sheets.  Of course both of the TVs have support for the Samsung Internet@TV Content Service, utilizing Yahoo's Widget platform, so TV owners can receive sports scores, stock ticker updates, Twitter access, and view content on YouTube.

Both TVs will be available in September with a $3,599.99 MSRP (46" model) and $4,499.99 MSRP (55" model).

"For consumers who are looking for the ultimate HD centerpiece and high-level performance in their home theater, the Samsung 8500 Series delivers break-through quality and design," Samsung said in a statement.  ""The 8500 Series underscores Samsung's dedication to providing a full range of HDTVs that not only achieve the highest levels of picture quality, but also provide unique and immersive entertainment experiences."

In New York City during the company's annual summer line up show, LG showed off several HDTV lineups that will be released before the end of the year.  Specifically, LG showed off the SL80 and SL90 line of HDTVs -- the SL80 uses CCFL backlight technology, an older technology, though it has a TruMotion 240HZ system.  Available in 42", 47" and 55" sizes for $1,599.95, $1,899.95 and $2,799.95.

The SL90 lineup, however, is the more notable one, as it is the LED-backlit series comin in two sizes: 42" and 47".  Prices and release dates will be released for these models later this summer.
