| Re: Panasonic Recorder Firmware Updates Panasonic DVD Recorders/Players sold in the USA do not support DivX playback. DivX play can not be enabled by firmware. The ES15/25 will not record to CD, no firmware will change that. The ES15/25 does not have a zoom feature, no firmware will change that. The ES15/25 does not have resume play after eject feature. The ES15/25 can record only in 1,2,4,6,8 hour modes and Flex Record. To record 3 hours Flex Record would be best, you can record at LP 4 hours and stop after three, but the quality will be the same as 4 hours. There is no firmware to record at other speeds. The ES15/25 has no region free or Macrovision hacks, by key sequence or firmware. Last edited by CCRomeo; 24-01-2007 at 11:11. |

| Re: Panasonic Recorder Firmware Updates I downloaded the file for the firmware update from the panasonic website. After I encountered a problem, I emailed them, and after three emails, they sent me the file as an attachment (pana_dvd.frm). I'm having the same problem with this one... This is my problem: when I try to save the file from the email attachment, it shows up as a WordPerfect file on my desktop, and there is no way I can rename, etc. to get it on there as a .FRM file. I know there is an area in WinXP where I can specify default file type, but I cannot find it. Can anyone help me? |

| Re: Panasonic Recorder Firmware Updates Thirties, Yes, some of the most recent firmware updates show as Word Perfect files. That concerned me at first but the update worked. |

So I had remembered your post, and this bright and chilly Sunday morning I pulled out the pdf file, and went through the steps. The only thing I did differently that wasn't in the pdf was to rename the downloaded Pana_DVD file once it was on my desktop. I added ".FRM" to the title. All went well. Since the upgrade happened, I guess my Panny 25 needed it. Thanks, again, for pushing me to the correct path. My guess is that the code was written in WordPerfect -- who knows??? I strongly suggest those doing this print a paper copy of the .pdf file: xxxx-FRM-INSTALL Another note: with computers and computer related stuff, the equipment and software is created by a team. The team that writes the user instructions are not crazy or stupid. The team process is usually flawed because changes get made after the instructions get written. Then the team never gets the final version of instructions done because everyone is screaming to get the goods on the train which is already rolling out of the station. So the innocent user must apply a good dose of imagination with regards to on-screen messages, etc. Did I say, "Thank you!" . . . .

| Re: Panasonic Recorder Firmware Updates Another thing that I noticed is that when doing a scheduled recording, the system allows me to specify and use Flexible Recording instead of the 1h, 2h, 4h, or 6h formats. Say you want to tape a 3h game. It gives you a very good recording and uses FR whenever the use is appropriate. I don't remember the machine doing this before the upgrade. Or maybe I never noticed. Anyone else have a comment? |

| Re: Panasonic Recorder Firmware Updates I believe all Panny's have allowed the FR in scheduling and instant recording. I know for sure my ES-15,25,30 and buggy EZ-17-/27 have. I use it all the time. FR3hr is so much better than LP on the Panny's. A lot less macroblocking. I've been told on the ES-20 you cannot PAUSE when in the FR mode though. |

Think of it this way - when you use the timer for recording - the DVD Recorder knows how much time it needs but when you pause or live record, it doesn't know that so it ends up (in my case) recording in EP when I had it set to FR.

| Re: Panasonic Recorder Firmware Updates I think by using the term "instant recording" I was referring to recording by not using the timer function, not using the INSTANT RECORD feature(pushing record multiple times to advance time). I can see how my statement was confusing. It was confusing for me, and I wrote it only a couple months ago You are correct, a person CANNOT use FR in the INSTANT RECORD mode. What I think I meant was, to use FR in a "non" timer operation you should push the FR key on the remote(newer Pannys) or go into FUNCTIONS, FLEXIBLE RECORD option, set your time and then push enter. This will allow you to use the flexible record mode in a non timer application. If you want to stop the recording you can push stop at anytime and you will have a shorter segment recorded in whatever speed you set your FR up for. That is if you had a new disc and setup FR for 3 hours and pushed stop after 1 hour, you'd have that one event recorded in a speed which would be like a 3hr speed. Of course your next event you'd want to set FR for 2hrs to keep that next event in the 3hr speed. After you get many titles on one disc it does get tricky trying to figure out what to set FR to, to be able to keep the machine in say a 3hr speed. I'm not positive if ES-20s allow FR in NON timer operations but I can confirm the following machines do allow FR in NON timer operation: ES-15,ES-25,ES-30, EZ-17, EZ-27, EZ-28 and EH-55. I would assume all EZ machines would allow this but I've only personally used the above mentioned machines. Did this post make more sense? I admit the first one was a little misleading. |

| Re: Panasonic Recorder Firmware Updates I've never heard of a firmware update corrupting anything on the HDD, in fact it's been reported that even after service by Panasonic (of course in less the HDD is replaced) the HDD and all it's content is left as is. |
