Panasonic DMR-HS2 hit the floor.. help!

Im new here. Did a Google search and this site came up. Hello all.

Ive had the DMR-HS2PP since they first came out and that thing wasnt cheap. I had it in my bedroom and decided to put up a 46" TV wall mounted and realized my equipment had to go in the closet. I set my components on the shelf and walked away to get a power strip and heard a crash. My beloved Panasonic hit the floor. It landed on the front corner and messed up the connectors between the main board and front face and also totaled the DVD drive somehow. All I get is "RECOVER" and a few seconds later it shuts down.

I have a few very important but private videos on the hard drive so sending it in for service isnt an option. I have connected the hard drive to a PC and it spins up and the PC sees it in device manager but windows doesnt recognize it.

Can anyone tell me how to access and hopefully convert the files??

I THINK there are some folks over at AVS forums that can help with that as they have been playing with those Panasonic's a long time and pretty sure if anyone knows how to pull files from them they do. I'd head over there and do a search and I bet something will come up. http://www.avsforum.com/avs-vb/forumdisplay.php?f=106 That should be the forum for the DVD recorders including Panasonic and others though lately all the chat is about the Philips Magnavox Units that wally world sells.
You should always burn backups to disk of critical keepers then at least this wouldn't have stranded your files, good luck.

I really think your out out of luck. Short of some type of hex editor you won't have any luck hooking your HDD to a PC and even if you found another HS2 when you hooked your HDD to it, it would immediately want to format it and not go any further until you answered YES to a reformat. The HDDs have ID that is somehow matched to the bios of the HDD so you can't swap HDDs between various machines without the reformat.
Your best and probably only option(other than repairing your HS2) would be in this thread, also at AVS.

I really appreciate the reply guys. I just glossed over the hex editor thread and.. omg, Im a bit of a techie but just dont know if I can pull that off.

I know I know, once a week I thought about backing everything up on RAM but just didnt do it. Shame on me.

Think I'll join AVS and see what those fine folks have to say about repairing the unit myself. Thanks again!
