Oppo Blu-Ray Player BDP S83 spotted at CEDIA

Folks at avsforum has spotted the long-awaited Blu-Ray Player at CEDIA. If you recall, the company has signed technology agreements with Blu-Ray early this year and started to work on feature set of the unit. Little information has been released to the public since then, and left Oppo fans speculating on company’s direction to develop a truly Universal player with Blu-Ray compatibility. We don’t have anything solid at this point but just an image of the hardware.

Updates from OPPO states that it has an Anchor Bay upscalling, a price bettwen $499 - 699 and release date in Winter (November 2008 - February 2009).

Shaping up to be more or less a 983 with BD playback. Looks like the 983 will be discontinued if this is the case. But even at $700 it will blow most of the higher priced BD players away for features and performance.

I've been privy to some more info on this player. Anyone considering a BD player this winter should wait and check this one out. Especially if DVD upscaling, file playback, SACD/DVD-A and related features are important. This player is looking like it could provide more features and performance than any other BD player at ANY price. Stay tuned. The only possible problem will be in actually laying your hands on one.

What Is The Current State:

The OPPO BDP-83 Blu-ray Player currently supports the following:

* SACD DSD over HDMI and multi-channel analog.
* SACD DSD to PCM
* Bit stream support for Dolby Digital Plus, Dolby Digital TrueHD, and DTS-HD Master to HDMI 1.3 or higher receivers. Optical and digital coaxial do not have the bandwidth required for these new high resolution audio formats, but they can still pass Dolby Digital and DTS CORE.
* 24Hz for Blu-ray and DVD-Video
* Source Direct. This allows the player to intelligently and automatically change the resolution of the player based off of the content source. For example, SD DVD will playback at 480i, while Blu-ray is played back at 1080p/24Hz.
* BD Live 1.1 with BONUSVIEW
* ABT 2010 de-interlacing and upscaling up to 1080p/60Hz with HDMI. Component is 1080i only (Blu-ray) with no ABT processing.
* Video Demo Mode: splits the screen vertically with one half showing the original source image, while the other half shows the results of adjustment to the Edge Enhancement, Detail Enhancement and Noise Reduction controls.
* Resolution and other Picture adjustments can be performed on the fly.
* 30 and 36bit Deep Color support
* DVD-Video playback
* DVD+R/RW/DL and DVD-R/DL disc support
* CD-R/RW disc support
* CD-Audio and HDCD playback
* AVCHD over DVD and USB
* MP3 with ID3 Tag and Album Art
* 1920x1080 native MPEG-2 and DivX support from USB or disc.

Preliminary list of features and specs.

Oppo has rolled out an "Early Adopter's Program" and will be putting players in the hands of 50 eager buyers this week. Later in March, the EAP will either be expanded or the player will be officially released (unless unanticipated bugs crop up).

As beta testers and EAP owners reveal more about the player, you can read about it at the dedicated AVS thread here.

I've been beta testing this player since September, it's a marvelous machine and seriously under-priced. The only player to even come close for features and performance in the unreleased Denon currently priced at $4700.

DVD picture quality is equal or better than the Oppo983 and many times better than any current BD player available.

Finally, in February 2008 a company executive disclosed that a Blu-ray player was in development.

The buildup towards the launch of this player has been quite unusual. A prototype was shown without fanfare during CEDIA in September 2008. The first product details were released in December. In February 2009, in a novel move for the field of consumer electronics, Oppo Digital started the "Early Adoption Program," by which initially 50 people would purchase the player (loaded with a pre-production firmware) and give their verdict on the product's readiness for mass launch. The program was later expanded to another 300 people, and finally in late April, a vote was taken as to whether to start a wider launch.

Now Oppo is sending out invitations to those who wanted to take part in the Early Adoption Program but were left out. According to a company representative, over 27,000 people had emailed their interest in the player. Only after all invitations have been fulfilled will the player be released to the general public.

The list price of the player is $599, but it can be preordered now for $499. Unlike the Early Adopter Program, which was limited to US residents, this sale is open to people in Canada (and also in Argentina, Australia, Bermuda, Brazil, Gibraltar, Hong Kong, Israel, Japan, Mexico, New Zealand, South Korea, Taiwan and the United Arab Emirates).

Most common Blu-ray users will not need many of the above features and thus a less expensive player model will be more than enough for them. Oppo is specifically targeting the niche of audio and video enthusiasts who require that extra that they haven't found with more mainstream players yet.

I only have one minor gripe, Region free will not be supported for either Blu-ray or DVD. Oppo had to nick this in order to gain a license to produce a BD player.

Yup, the BDA refused to license the player without "robust" decoder-based DVD region locking. Expect to see mods available for the player once it gets into the right hands. Oppo already has a couple month backlog of buyers wanting to purchase it.

There will be a firmware update around the same time, so new players may not ship with the latest FW revision.

It's easily "worth" 3-4X that much if you compare it to players offering similar performance for DVD upscaling, analog audio outs and the like. If you seek a universal player for both SACD and DVD-A, the only competitor is the $4500 Denon. It's really a matter of what features you want.

The Oppo 983 DVD player, (now discontinued), sold for $399. This player is essentially the same but with BD playback for another $100. Used Oppo 983s are selling at auction for $350+. This is because of the quality of the ABT 2010 video processor. So it's a matter of what that's worth to you. If you watch a lot of DVDs, there is no better player for picture quality at any price.

Well, you can get the DVDO-Edge for around $650 and use it to process any video with the ABT 2010. I've always wanted to get that and use it for my satellite and DVD recorder.

Nope, not unless you want to overpay for a BD player. Oppo was known for great value at a good price. The same Anchor Bay chip is in the discontinued but ever-available DV-983H on ebay and other places online. Unlike Oppo's BDP-83 bluray offering, the DV-983 has multi-region capabilities and plays SACD and DVD-Audio flawlessly, they've been working out lots of bugs on the BDP-83 for over 6 months now (it's July 2009). Definitely not worth $500+ unless you have money to burn.

It's a screaming good value at $499 considering that the only other universal BD player is Denon's $4500 model. The player has been auctioning on eBay for $600+ prior to it's official release. One went for $800. Obviously if all one wants is a BD transport there are cheaper options, that goes without saying.

According to the Oppo forums, there are no firmware hacks yet to make this unit region-free and hardware mods (if available) add another $100-$200 to it. The beta player was auctioned on ebay for $600-$800 BEFORE it became generally available to order from Oppo's website for dopes who "had to have it now."

Two facebook pals bought the BDP-83 during the "early adoption" phase and both still find bugs such as repeating playback of CD tracks, problems with SACD plaback (et al) and, most important, both of them write that when compared their Oppo's 983Hs, the SD upconversion isn't as good.

Thanks but no thanks. I think Oppo bit off too much, trying to make a model that was everything to everyone. I hope they bring the 983 back, it's a true classic!
