mdr515/f7 or 2160 by magnavox?

I am considering a Magnavox 2160 (refurbished) or a new MDR515/F7 as a replacement for my broken Panasonic EZ48VK.

Which is better all around?

If considering a "refurbished" 2160 or 2160A be sure to find out if it was refurbished by Funai in Groveport Ohio. These should come in a sealed generic brown Magnavox box, not the red and white retail box, see the photo of my Magnavox 2160A/2160 boxes. The red and white box contained my new 2160 purchased from walmart.com and the brown boxes contained the 2160 and 2160A models refurbished by Funai (the manufacturer) in Groveport Ohio, as purchased from J&R World in New York City. Beware third party "refurbishing" operations that sell unknown goods on Amazon or other outlets that may not offer the Funai warranty. Know what you are buying!

If you purchase a 2160A be sure to check to make sure it has the latest firmware update. There have been two, or is it three firmware updates for the 2160A? Wajo has posted the latest information and links for the latest firmware upgrade.

If you purchase a 513 or 515 do not use the 2160A firmware upgrade with those recorders. See Wajo's corrections to the earlier misleading information on the Funai support website.
