Looking for Good VHS/DVD Player combo.

I want a good DVD/VHS Player combo because I still have many tapes.

What ones would you recommend?

Since VHS is long dead the only stuff you'll find is (sadly) the cheap and crappy stuff. If I were you I'd look for a S-VHS on ebay and purchase a separate DVD player.

As Diizzy said most if not all current combos are of very poor quality. I'd agree with getting a separate DVDR and VCR, not only will you get better quality recordings but you'll have more flexibility.
Are your tapes S-VHS and are you wanting to convert from one format to another, or just play back your VHS tapes?

His tapes aren't most likely S-VHS but the players are cheap on eBay and they have higher quality components than your average VHS player.

Re: Looking for Good VHS/DVD Player combo.

I only want to playback my vhs tapes. So there is no DVD/VHS combos with a decent quality vcr?

What about Panasonic's Blu Ray/VHS combo deck?

Because I have a HDTV and I don't have a Blu Ray player yet and was looking into getting one.

Re: Looking for Good VHS/DVD Player combo.

I haven't used the BR/VHS player you mentioned but actually I think the VHS section in the Panasonic combos are better than average. When I was knocking the current combos(Panasonic in particular) I was more knocking the DVDR section not the VHS section.
While a older S-VHS recorder from Ebay may be better quality and have more features, personally I think the VHS section on a Panasonic combo should work just fine for playing or the occasional recording. Not sure about the BR/VHS unit but something like the EZ-48v will playback S-VHS tapes although not in full resolution S-VHS is capable of. I'd try and stay away from the cheap Funai made combos, IMO the VHS section in those are junk.

I'm not looking for a dvd recorder.

Also, Is it safe to use my Philips wet, non abrasive, vhs head cleaner?

So are you saying that the dvd recorder on the EZ48 is not that good?

Re: Looking for Good VHS/DVD Player combo.

It's just that the EZ-48v is so buggy in general. Actually the DVDR section can make some fine recordings..... when it's working.
If all you're looking for is a DVD player and you'd also like a BR player then I would think Panasonics BR player/VHS combo might be a good choice. I really wouldn't suggest the EZ-48v especially if you didn't need the DVD recording feature.
Sure I would think your Philips non abrasive wet cleaner should be fine. For quick cleanings I use a similar wet cleaning tape.

Re: Looking for Good VHS/DVD Player combo.

do you own the ez48?

I don't think Panasonic makes a dvd/vhs combo without a dvd recorder.

Do you think a Sony dvd/vhs combo would be any good?

Re: Looking for Good VHS/DVD Player combo.

No but I have owned a EZ-28 which is very similar but lacks the VHS part and I did assist a friend with his EZ-48v and after returning (3) all of which would lock up when trying to delete channels, I do have some experience with it. I've also read many posts about the EZ-48v and very few are good.
I think you're right, Panasonics website doesn't list a DVD/VHS player anymore and they only list one DVD player and of course no VHS only units. Wow, not only is VHS dead but DVD players are joining them
If you don't need the DVD recording part I guess you could look at Sony. I wouldn't give you a pluged nickle for a current Sony DVD recorder but their players have always been decent and their VHS players have been fine. Here's a Link to Sony's website and their one and only combo, pickings are indeed slim for DVD players or combo players.
Sony DVD recorders boarder on the ridiculous for trying to record anything. A Sony DVDR(and many other brands) seem to insist that most everything you might want to record is copy protected! Even just recording off the air.

Re: Looking for Good VHS/DVD Player combo.

I wouldn't mind getting another dvd recorder, I had a Magnavox dvd recorder that was pretty good but I got a better dvd player for my HDTV with HDMI from Sony, plus it didn't have a digital tuner. What dvd recorder would you recommend?
