Hi,

I am currently trying out DVDFab Platinum version 5.2.2.2. I am looking at it as a means to backup up my entire DVD collection. I am ripping the DVDs using 'DVD to Mobile' and into the format 'generic.avi.xvid.audiocopy', and I've got a couple of questions on this process:-

1. DVDFab offers a list of resolutions that I can rip to, does it select the best resolution for the title I am ripping? For example the film 'Alien Resurrection' is 2.35:1, and yet DVDFab defaults to 720x304 which has an aspect ratio of 2.36842, rather than choosing 752x320 which has an aspect ratio of 2.35:1.

2. For subtitles when asking for them to be rendered into the picture, do they have to be rendered onto the actual picture or is there anyway for it to take advantage of the 'blank space' below the film in widescreen films? I believe the answer to this is no, unless I use extract the subtitles to the 'IDX' and 'SUB' files. My main player for these films will be my 360 and unfortunately that can't handle the truth (or these files).

Thanks.

well any source dvd has a horizontal resolution of only 720, so there'd be little point in converting to a higher value

Not to worry, DVDFab is automatically cropping down to the actual video information. The black area removed was added to the original to make it DVD compliant (720x480). The ratio listed on the DVD box of 2.35:1 is more of an approximation and should be used only to differentiate it from other film formats (like 16/9).

DVDFab is removing the blank space (per my previous statement) to save on file size and improve the encode quality. By default, selected subtitles are "burned in" to the movie and can only be included in the area (720x304 in this case) actually being encoded. The black area you see on the screen is actually being added by your playback device. I don't know what the Xbox360 can play, but you might try selectable subtitles using XVID in a DIVX container:

surely it's better to place an original DVD ( or a copy of it) into the Xbox drive, then you'll have access all of the subtitles & other bells & whistles. the Xbox360 IS a dvd player! so why spend hours rendering & streaming scaled down copies!
just make dvd copies via customise or main movie options in DVDFAb with whatever audio & subtitles you wish to keep/. To keep costs down you can use the DVD5 copy option and verbatim or similar blank single layer DVD+R media - that is cheap & will play fine in the XBOX.
