The first episode of Byteside for 2010 was a great look into future trends for the technology industry, but the highlight of the evening for me was when Mark Pesce – one of the pioneers of virtual reality, co-inventor of VRML and regular judge on The New Inventors – told the audience: “For All Of You Who Are Planning To Buy A 3DTV: For God’s Sake Don’t…”

You can watch the relevant section of the show at the 43:50 mark, but really you should be watching the entire thing. And if nothing else, this should give you pause before you splash out thousands on a new TV later this year just because it has 3D.
* Byteside episode is 60min. 54sec. long *

Your brain has about 10 different clues which it uses to detect depth. When you’re in the theatre [watching a 3D movie] you’re only getting one clue – which is parallax.

So what happens is while you’re in the theatre your brain is ignoring all of the other depth cues, throwing the other nine away and just training on the one. This produces a situation which is known technically as “binocular dysphoria”.

Now what’ll happen is you’ll leave the theatre and your perception – your depth perception – will be screwed up. It’ll snap back to normal [but] it’ll take different times – because people are on a bell curve, some will snap back immediately, some will snap back in an hour and so on.

Now I want you to imagine what happens when you’re doing that to yourself night after night after night. And, of course, we realised we’d be giving these systems to six year olds whose brains are incredibly plastic, and would actually be training to a new set of visual stimuli.

None of this has been thought through by any of the consumer electronics companies who are intent on giving you 3D. And it’s not a problem if you’re going to see a movie. But if you’re going to be using it night after night in your living room, it’s actually probably quite unhealthy.”

Pesce knows what he’s talking about. Aside from being an MIT dropout (according to Wikipedia at least), Pesce founded a company back in the early 90s which worked closely with Sega to create a virtual reality headset for the Megadrive. Back in 1994, he wrote about the notion of binocular dysphoria for Wired.

Somehow, I doubt that anyone is stupid enough to watch 3DTV every night for many hours ...

What the hell am I saying??? Ban it, Ban 3D TV now!!! 3DTV is the work of the devil!!!
Won't someone think of the Children!!!

/me foresees many traffic accidents due to fubar parallex errors in human vision. It's a good thing that cars are developing collision avoidance mechanisms & self drive technologies

I remember a time when the church wanted to ban the printing press because they believed it would be bad for people to know too much through reading ....
Printing presses are the work of the devil

Everything lends itself to abuse, but the positives outweigh the negatives.

Wait 10years, and 3D-Ultra HDTV will be Better Than Life
Then we can worry

I have about two clues what he's talking about, but it could be 1 or 3 as well. Can i be more vague? Yes i cannot!

He knows what he's talking about, because he dropped out of MIT.. i think i can manage to drop out of MIT as well.

Some people watch porn every night for many hours, why not in 3D? Some people watch Big Brother or Idols for many hours each day, why not in 3D?

Personally i doubt you will get some sort of disease or malfunction of it. Let's call it evolution.

I still find the concept interesting.
I'm waiting to see the first murder defense of 3D TV caused the person to go crazy & commit murder.Like the infamous sugar defense.
For me I doubt I will be buying one at least for a while if at all.
I'm waiting for Roddenberry's widow to send me a portable holographic emitter.

I understand he dropped out of MIT to do something important & technical.

I suspect porn addicts have more physical problems, like tennis elbow & social interaction with the opposite sex , and the parallex error will be the least of their worries.
Big Brother or Idol in 3D .. omfg? What a waste of cool technology.

I love evolution ... survival of the fittest and all that. If the *apparently brilliant* MIT dropout is right, humanity should be looking forward to a wonderful future, despite significantly reduced population

Don't you mean 'Because of significantly reduced population'....

I all ready don't have normal depth perception so I doubt a 3d TV would do anything for me any ways.
I use one eye at a time and mom was told when I was a baby that I'd never be able to fly or drive a car becuase I had no depth perception and so couldn't judge distance.
I have done both and have a license so I guess the docs back then had no real clues what a person can do with my issues.
I'm happy enough with the TV I have now and wont buy another just becuase 3D is the latest cool thing anyways.

Necessity is the mother of all invention.

Either the world solves it's population issues, or doesn't. Either way, a suitable solution will be found to resolve the crisis. The easiest solution is to just kill nearly everyone, or have child restrictions. The better way would be to find a way to spread the population across the universe.

But *nearly* everyone has something to contribute, even if they're just picking up the trash outside your house, or dishing up hotdogs on the corner.
Some people are just hopeless though, and should be used for lion fodder, or if they're too lazy to run, fertiliser

You could try by going to the Avatar 3D movie to see if it works.

I hate it when doctors tell somebody they can't do things beforehand.

I love this kind of stuff! I love it when handicapped or disabled do things "they should never be able to because some authority said so". I absolutely love it when people are better than the sum of their capabilities.

Thanks, never really considered it a disability as I've had it since I was a baby. They fixed my crossed eye's with a operation and I guess my brain said screw it, all ready know how to deal with it by using one eye or the other so that's where I stayed.
I had to get a special slip from the doc when I went to get my license saying he thought I could cope and crap like that back in the day but it never really comes up now that I have the thing and I function just fine.
I have tried to sync both eyes before on those depth perception test and it's just about impossible for me.
I pick whichever eye I want or need to use and just do it, I can do it any time I want and it freaked out the docs at the local medical school and they had me do it as fast as I could and when they told me to switch them while others docs and students watched.
No mater your issue as long as your stuck with it early I think the body just tends to figure a different way to make whatever is screwy work.
I don't feel like I have a problem seeing how I've always been this way so I don't know any different and I can do pretty much what I want.
Maybe I'd be a bit more excited about 3d anything if I could actually see it.
