Hi everyone.

Just had this question, and maybe you guys are the appropiate to get the best answer from... I know it sounds n00bish as hell, but...

A friend 'o mine recently showed me some music videos, they were "ripped" or encoded or something, as "HDTV", and they are basically extremely, Hi-Q videos...

So the question would be, what is this HDTV exactly? Searching in this forum I found some topics about "HD-DVD". I mean, I know HDTV stands for High-Definition-TV or something like that, but what I dont know is why are they (the videos) stated as "HDTV"... were they ripped from the TV with a expensive Capture Card, or...??
I mean I dont seem to understand it very well... is it the next thing after DVDs??? That Blue-Ray thingy??

Or maybe if you could direct me to some place where all of this is explained (well I mean in computer terms like ripping and such, not wikipedia ) I'd really appreciate it.

Thanks for taking your time to read this.

---[Edit]---
Sorry if this is not the appropiate forum (yeah, tipical phrase for n00bs ), but couldnt find a more "suitable" one.

HDTV is coming with higher resolution and bitrates compared to SDTV.
SDTV is basically all res up to max DVD res and bitrates > www.videohelp.com/dvd

http://www.videohelp.com/hd
There is HDTV as 576i, 576p, 1080i and 1080p. 1080i is mostly used these days.
*i stands for interlaced, *p stands for progressive. So 1080p is the highest res and Quality, ergo 1920x1080.

Don't forget 720p. Half the HDTV stuff I watch is 720p, the other half 1080i.
But yes darklordsatan, your friend more than likely recorded it from an HDTV source.

Of course, my mistake.
I meant 720, not 576.

HDTV is most excellent. I can't wait until it REALLY catches on. I say ban all regular TV's for sale. HDTV only!

You don't notice it as much though until the TV size gets above 21" or so...

Had it for almost 2 years now with a 50" Sony LCD rear projection and I still sit there and say WOW! from time to time. Especially Discovery HD and wildlife type shows.

Yes! And network NFL football and a lot of the other sports (ABC college football game right now) are now HD, and most of the newer prime-time shows, not to mention a few of the daytime soaps. I am watching these on a widescreen rear-projection TV with a rooftop antenna via a new Samsung HDTV tuner going to component TV inputs. It is addictive. After watching for a while in hi-def you don't want to go back!!

I've gotten two different answers from DishNet tech support. "Everything on DishNet is 1080i" and "they don't tell us what levels of HDTV are being sent on the downlink". Along with this question maybe the fact that the DishNet DVR's automatically upconvert 480i, 480p, 720p to 1080i so it may not be possible to determine what quality of HDTV is being viewed. What is the story?

Probably the latter. Dish networks' low prices aren't without cost.
