Hi there,

Also is burning to DVD/CDs using the USB connection any less reliable than using a internal IDE one ?

Many thanks for any advice guys.

Hi and Welcome!

we even have a review of this drive. Look here:

Using an external drive is normally not less reliable than an internal drive, provided your computer has an USB 2.0 HiSpeed controller.

Thanks for that, looks like its worth getting then. I was abit unsure at first with it being a portable one but after reading your review it seems to be up for the job quite Nicely. Im expecting to be burning approx 400 CD-R discs over the next 6 months on it with me wanting to preserve my data for as long as possible so will be using some Taiyo Yuden CD-R discs which seems to be the best brand out there acording to you guys and various other sources.

Hi,

for this amount of discs, you should consider a Half Height drive instead of a slim type, since they are more robust.
A Pioneer in external enclosure should do a good job with TY CD-R But stay clear from Liteon (or rebadges) for CD-R application.

Would a Pioneer DVD DVR-216DBK SATA be ok then ? If so what external encloseure would you recommended to go with it.

Thanks

Why not the 116 series with P-ATA interface? If you can get one, a 115 is another excellent option.

I have no experience with external SATA-USB enclosures. My Pioneer 112 did a fine job in an enclosure with GL811E chipset.

The reason I was looking for a external DVD writer was because I have a Dell Optiplex 520 desktop PC which wont fit a 5.25" DVD writer. But after you mentioning Pioneer as a good brand Ive ended up discovering that Pioneer do a slim internal DVD writer the Pioneer DVR-KD08, which looks to fit my Dell which has a Ultra ATA connection. Ideally Id like to have a internal one fitted into my computer than to have a external one so would there be much compromise involved in terms of quality and reliability when comparing the Pioneer DVR-KD08 and the one you mention ?

I recommended a 5,25" drive since they are more solid, mechanically. You mentioned, you want to burn several 100 discs. And such is beyond the capabilities of a lightweight slim drive, IMO.

Of course, you can install a slim drive internally, if you like. But don't expect them to be much more than some kind of "emergency solution".

Ok I think Ill go for the full size DVD writer. Been looking at external enclosures that include the GL811E chipset and have managed to spot this one.

Will this be suitable for use with the Pioneer DVR-116D ?

Hi,

I guess, this should do its job. The additional firewire might increase the price remarkeably.

There cheaper non firewire model only has the Cypress chipset, or will both chipsets work just as good with the Pioneer DVR-116D ?

Or if you could recommend maybe a better brand than Safecom that has the GL811E chipset ?

I was not very satisfied with Cypress and DVR-112, but this was with DVD at higher speeds than 12x.

If I remember correctly, then there are retail external drives from Pioneer available - at least in several countries. Such is a no-brainer

Many thanks for all the advice mciahel

Hi again mciahel,

Ive just ordered both the external enclosure and Pioneer DVD writer and am awaiting delivery. I also decided to buy a Pioneer DVR-KD08 slim internal DVD writer for the occasional use as well as they had it in stock at my local computer store. But for some reason my Dell GX520 doesnt recognise the drive, any idea what I might be doing wrong ?
