Hi,

if you can manage to open the case without damage, then a DVD drive will fit. Mechanically.

The next point to check is the power supply of the enclosure: It must provide 2A@12V and 2A@5V.

And now the most problematic part: The interface. It depends on the chipset, whether the data transfer rate is high enough to feed a DVD writer.

For that old CD writer, 7 MB/sec was totally sufficient. For a DVD writer, you should have a transfer rate of approx. 20 MB/sec. I am not sure if the chipset is capable to do that. (If you have opened the case, you may check the chipset and try to find its specs on the web - post as much information as possible please). In case you already own a DVD writer you can try to install the drive (if the PSU is powerful enough, see above) and just try it out.

Thanks for the help

The case and PSU state DC12V 1.6A and there's no mention of a 5V supply so does this mean there wont be one?

If I can get it open and try it out, is there any danger I would damage my writer or would it just not work if the PSU is inadequate or the unit not compatible?

Thanks

Normally there should be a 5V lead. Maybe the 5V are taken from the 12V internally. This would decrease the available amount of power @12V additionally. I suspect, it won't be enough.

The power supply might get overloaded. I am not sure, if such will damage the drive that is connected to. In the best case, the drive just refuses to work.

What about dropping the support guys at freecom a line?
