Enclosure's support for PI/PIF error scanning.
| External Enclosures Discuss, Enclosure's support for PI/PIF error scanning. at CD and DVD Writers forum; I have an internal Benq 1620 DVD-RW, which supports error scanning. Would error scanning be possible when the burner is put into an external enclosure? |

| Yes it would, at least in the USB enclosures I've used. I've had some problems using a BenQ DW1655 and a FireWire connection while trying to scan, however, but I'm not sure if it's a problem with the drive, the FireWire-ATA bridge, the FireWire chipset, or little green men from Mars messing with their ray-guns.

| Scanning via Firewire is almost always better than scanning via USB (fewer dropped samples), so try to get a combo Firewire/USB2 enclosure if you can. Drage, what specific kinds of problems have you had? What's the bridge chipset on your enclosure? Knowing how buggy the DW1650/DW1655 firmwares have been, I'm wondering how the results would compare to a DW1640 or DW1620 using the same enclosure and chipset. |

The problems seemed random but IIRC I couldn't get the BenQ1655+PL-3507+FireWire to scan CD-R media reliably. I don't remember if DVD scanning was reliable. By reliable I mean finish the scan without stopping or hanging.
