External Enclosures Discuss, Anyone Using 5.25" SATA Enclosures Yet? at CD and DVD Writers forum; I know that 99.9% of the people who have SATA burners have them installed internally, but I'm wondering if anyone has done any experimenting with using say a Samsung SH-S203B in a SATAtoUSB2 enclosure such as the Welland ME-340Q:

I have 4 Galaxy METAL GEAR 205202AUAS. I am using a sammy 203b and optiarc 7200s(I think a tried a Pio 215d also) they work fine for me. No problems burning, reading/ripping or flashing and no problems reaching 20x burn speeds. I am using a PCI card ESata 4 port Sil 3114 SoftRaid 5 controller. I have been using the enclosures for more than 6 months. USB is only good for burning @12x or less.

I have one similar to Jim's but i use the eSATA on it through my mobo or my PCMCIA card on my lappy with a 203B in it. 20x burns no problems even on the lappy. I've never used the USB. Had it a year or so now.

I have two USB/Firwire/eSATA Combo enclosures. They are both selfmade

The enclosures were Mapower/Fantec H51 USB/Firewire or Firewire enclosures for IDE devices. The good point on this H51 enclosures are the "SCSI holes" on the back. There are bridgeboards available fitting perfectly into this SCSI holes.

My two enclosures are "filled" with a Pioneer DVR-215 and a Samsung SH-S203N. Both working as expected

Attached a few images of my Pio...

Wow, TM, you should open a business and start selling those ready-made.

A triple-interface 5.25" enclosure is just what I would want.

Hello.
I have my Samsung SH-S203B in one external case from Vantec.
Vantec NST-530S2 (http://www.vantecusa.com/front/product/view_detail/293).
This case offer 5V @ 1.5A and 12V @1.8A and SunplusIt chipset (SPIF225A) (http://www.sunplusit.com/english/pro.../SPIF225A.aspx), and only USB 2.0 output connection.

My only Samsung drive is doing fine in this case . I'll attach some pictures.

Those Mapower enclosures are really nice. They're hard to find in the USA though...I have one that I bought several years ago but lately they seem to have disappeared from US vendors. I like how the fan is set up to pull air through the power supply. The intake holes around the power button could be drilled out a bit for better airflow, though I doubt the PSU is going to get terribly hot powering just an optical drive.

Mine originally came with a USB/PATA bridgeboard, but I'm in the process of modding it for eSATA, including overhauling the power supply with better quality capacitors. I haven't found a good USB/eSATA bridgeboard like yours, so I'm just settling for a passive eSATA connector attached to a SCSI backplate that I found online. I found another place selling DIY SATA power connectors so I'll probably cut off the original Molex connector coming out of the PSU and substitute SATA, just to avoid using an adapter.

Mapower Germany told me the H51 is no longer in production. I got a larger number of H51 enclosures a few month ago. It was a remaining stock at one of the distributors....

My bridgeboard is a IOI bridgeboard. (http://www.ioi.com.tw/)

You can find almost every type of bridgeboard there:
http://www.ioi.com.tw/products/prodcat.aspx?CatID=101

The board I'm using is the UF2DSATA01 in combination of the ESATA-ECS-1R cable.

I'm sure you'll find a distrubutor in the US. I found a few shops in germany selling the IOI stuff.

I have an old Plextor external CD-R [scsi] that would make a perfect base for a DIY conversion. Took a look at the IOI website and they have exactly the board I need... but... looks like they only have one distributor listed, Tragant in Germany. Will try an email to their sales dept. in taiwan and see if there are any US agents yet.

In case anyone is interested in the Welland enclosure, I bought the ME-340J version a few weeks ago.

This has eSATA (as well as USB) but I've only used it via USB.

It looks like it has the same SunplusIt chipset as the Vantec case Vasy has.

Using an Optiarc 7200S, it has no problems reading and writing at 16x.
