Trouble with LG BH08xS20 and TDK BD disks - bad burns

I bought a LG BH08LS20 and was looking forward to it's overspeeding ability, well that didn't work out too well, I would try TDK 4x 50GB BD discs(TDK BLDRFB 000) and at 6x every 1 out of 8 or so discs would end up with a bad burn, disk would stop playing and also had pixilating problems. So I started to use my Buffalo BR816SU2 drives, which burn the TDK's at 4x - I don't have a problem...So I thought I would try the LG again - this time at 4x and see. well, I got a burn that pixilated at chapter 15 out of 21 and had to skip that chapter, luckily it would do that even, and the start of chapter 16 was pixilating and stuttering also, then it played thru to the end. The info on this situation LG fw EL02-05(MCSE patched for increased reading speed), the disk backed up The Soloist (2009 region A), see below for a quality scan with Opti Drive Control130 using a lite on iHES208 drive, the layer break is beyond bad and if one looks there is reading dips, also the BIS is bad too. With the Buffalo and TDK's I get LDC of 130 or so and BIS of 10-15, with an occasional spike - the LG seems to beable to overspeed Ritek BR2 000 (4X 25GB) at 8x without a bad burn except about 1 in 20 or so. But having BD's turn into coasters is not cost effective, and this LG burner is not dependable at all, about all it's good for is reading (with MCSE patch)... Anyone else have bad burns with this drive (BD burns)???

for comparison here is a burn from a Buffalo BR816SU2 drive with TDK 4x 50GB BD disc, movie length is about the same - the LDC and BIS are a world different than with the LG BH08 drive.

there was a user few weeks ago that also had trouble with TDK disc, he contacted the ebay seller and got replacement disc.

replacement disc burned/worked fine, so there appear to be some bad TDK batches out there.

I remember soapman72's problem - and his replacement disks also took 4-6 mins to initialize in IMGBURN - they still had problems, but the disks I have are not from a bad batch, it also would not explain how I got a 'good' burn with the Buffalo and such a bad one from the LG, and the LG has produced bad burns before - mostly overspeeding...I think there needs to be some fw work done - that is why I am wondering if others have had LG problems, esp. w/ TDK's

Thanks for letting us know Sloveheart. It seems that the LG is not doing well with TDK 50GB 4x. Have you tried with TDK 6x BD-R DL? I'm interested in seeing the scans as well.

How did you found out they were bad burns? Did they pass verification ok?
I have burned couple Verbatim BD DL. They burned and verified ok but I did not watch the whole movie or performed any tests.

It is a real shame I had trouble with both Pioneer 203 and LG BH08xS20.

Since then I have changed the drive for a new one (same model). But the problem is still there. It seems to be worth with lover speed write and almost not visible on high speed…

Recorded Verbatim BD DL looks fine though.

I hope Lite-On will come up with new BD-RE drive soon. They seem to be pretty good with optical drives…

I am burning a TDK 4x DL @6x (Data using Nero) right now, I will post a Lite-on Quality scan and TRT later.

Sadly I chose 6x to burn but it burned 2x the whole way...

Yes bd defect management is off.

Well it's Nero that's the problem, some reason it is not burning at it's max. Heck even putting in a 4x Ritek gives me only 1x writing option wth?

Then I leave the disc in and go to CDSpeed and it's burning 8x now. Very odd.

Well here is the 2x burn...ugly!

Welcome...I guess TDK 4x 50gb might be the culprit, too bad - the only other option is paying allot for other bd 50gb 4x or higher, or Sony 2x 50gb - but the burn times get to be too long, I burn 4-5 BD's at a time sometimes and DL at that, so 1.3 Hrs for a burn is bad for me.

I haven't had the money for the TDK 6x 50GB discs- they cost allot on ebay and my favorite seller smartimports.net (william farris-who will match any price) might not even carry them, so I can't say I've tried them, and I haven't looked at your chart concerning them, I assume the LG might overspeed those to 8x, but looking at the performance w/ TDK 4x 50gb, I wouldn't want to risk it...

P.s. I did have some good luck w/ dvd burner - the sony optiarc ad-7240s is a great drive - excellent quality burns - esp. compared to my retired sammy s223f!!!

The way I found out at first was trying to play the disks, I've learned now to skip thru the chapters and if that works the burn will at least be playable; it can still pixilate or hang, but will advance from the trouble spot. I first had oversped tdk 4x 50gb discs (burned at 6x max) and yes it seems that this works out better than 4x burning, but after 10-15 burns I got a disk that would not play at all, not even get to the menu, others would hang somewhere into the movie. I do not use defect management or verify, maybe I should try verify, but I generally rely on trying the disk in my standalone player for verification. Now that I got a Lite On iHES208 I did the scanning and viola - bad regions, megadeath in his post shows another bad burn...

I thought I had a bad drive - that is why I wrote this thread - to see if there have been others with this problem - looks like there is a problem, I am upset about LG - my GGW-H20l worked fine - it read slow, but at least the burns were good, now the drive has been discontinued, remaining ones cost allot, I guess I will have to wait for the new models to come out and try to find one that is a good high speed burner...

Verbatims would be nice, but they seem to cost allot, for single layer memorex (ritek BR2 000) 25gb 4x seem to overspeed fairly well to 8x - I have had one bad burn in about 20 attempts. again, coasters w/BD cost allot, it hurts...

Yes - it is ugly LG needs to try to fix this with fw revisions - if that is even the problem???

so far they haven't put out one update, buffalo did, and IOdata put out EL02-06 - but one needs a serial number to download it - no one seems willing to link the file to a post so we can try it, I PM'ed 2601 to see if he or she would do it (they posted the fw update) - no response...oh well
LG's site is also hard to navigate...

If you have a lg bh08ls20 - it will turn your drive into a ns drive - no lightscribe... the firmware is okay - I do not know about the link (haven't tried it) but see this post for other LG fw that is fairly recent: http://club.myce.com/f91/post-new-fi...ml#post2462210- version 2 came out - it adds win7 capability - some rare media types and as ala42 says - maybe new write stragies - I do not know what EL02-06 has by way of changes but you should be able to reflash your LG back to LS fw (you might have to first use version 1.00-3 then ver.2) if you want to try EL02-06.

As a mac owner. Here is a trick I learned from updating my firmware. If you have a Windows Vista or Windows 7 (only tried w7) or have a friend and no I am not suggesting piracy pop the install DVD into your Mac and hit C on boot.

Do not install, instead choose repair and then command line window.
You copy the program above to a USB stick ahead time. From command line you can access usb or you can burn that to a CD. Run it. The Windows Vista and 7 install CDs have a mini version of Windows. So you can run a diagnostic package or firmware flash w/o installing Windows.
