Why would you need a burner to put an image on your hard drive? A burner is obviously for burning to a blank media. To make an image, you only need a BD-ROM drive, but, it MUST at least be a blu-ray reader, yes.

If the disc is too big, there's at least one thing to try that doesn't involve reencoding:

-Open the playlist found with BDInfo
-Deselect the streams you don't need

-Use Build mode and select the folder you output to. NOTE: It must contain the BDMV *AND* Certificate directories!
-Make sure ImgBurn is set to use UDF 2.50. VERY IMPORTANT!!!
-Write it out to disc

If the BD folder is too large still for your disc, then you'll need to reencode. For that I recommend RipBot at the moment. It works fairly well but it takes a *LONG* time even on a fast machine. And you will, of course, reduce quality. Hope this helps!

No problem. I hope it helps people. I did all that from memory but I don't think there's any mistakes in it. The latest ImgBurn really helps, too, because it now detects BD structures and should help set things up correctly. These methods can also be used by people who want to put their movies on their hard drives. That's what I do. I just recently got my laptop with a burner, and I have no media yet, so, for me I just use these methods to make ISOs. Then I just mount them with Virtual CloneDrive. (Daemon Tools was ok up until recently but the latest version has issues) Anyway, if anyone has questions or problems, I'll do my best to help out.

Hi,
Just waiting for my LG Blu-ray burner to arrive to start testing. Is there a way to do just movie only Blu-ray backup? Media for 25g is reasonable, but 50gb is too expensive right now. I don't know if movie only with hi-def audio is usually around 25g or not?

Many newer blu-ray movies even main movie only will not fit into BD-R/RE 25GB. They come with DTS-HD Master Audio which takes 4-6GB so you only have 18GB left on your BD-R/RE disc. For example Live Free or Die Hard main movie + hidef audio takes almost 36GB, there's no way you can fit into BD 25GB unless you reencode the video.

That's why I'm wishing for a transcoding engine some day like we had with DVD's. Just enough to tweak it down a bit to fit. Reencoding is fine, as well, it just takes a while even on fast hardware.

I downloaded a backup and don't have any idea whether they applied the key or now. Well I made an iso from those files using Imgburn and PowerDVD says it's not a "supported disc, format" or something like that. I made sure that the file system was set to UDF 2.5 and tried burning the iso onto my BD-RE disc with both imgburn and Nero, but I always get the same error when I try to play the movie. Is it because the key wasn't inserted into those .mts files or I'm using the wrong file system?

So the instructions on the first post assume you have a file less than 25GBs and there is not a work around yet for backing up larger original BDs that we have purchased to a 25GB RE.

So unless someone does some work on this we have to wait for 50GB RE to come down in price.

RipBot is good for shrinking stuff down. It takes for freaking ever to run even on decent hardware, however. And be aware that you will always get an AVC file out of it when you're done. So if you start with a VC1 it'll get converted to AVC with potentially a noticeable loss in quality. But, it's a good start.

Ok, I'm running AnyDVD/HD, DVD Shrink (on my standard discs), and ImgBurn. I have not been able to burn my Blu rips because I haven't found any compression program out that works well. I am curious if there is any updates on compression programs for Blu Ray? I want something that will keep the best/most quality. My problem is I always do a complete disc backup. I'm sure i could just remove some things (like menus and special features) but i want to keep it ALL. Any ideas?

Yes I did. Did a little looking and found that it basically compresses it down to 720p or 720i...don't want to go that low in quality. I'm hoping for like 1080i. I might have to go ahead and try it out, but if what I read was true I'll still need to find something else. yeah for dvd i only do main movie. but if i were spending the money for blu-ray i would also want a full disc backup.

If you're referring to RipBot, I don't know where you read that but it's simply not true. (720i?? What the hell is that, anyway? ) It can do whatever you want in terms of resolution and/or bitrate. It's just slow and at the moment there is *NO* software that allows you to manipulate the disc contents AND keep menus/extras/etc. If you want to shrink, you're doing a movie only copy at this point. Period. Some day we'll get software that'll do more, but, it's EXTREMELY complicated to do so with Blu-ray. It's not like supporting DVD shrinking at all. 3 codecs, BDJ, screwy menus, etc all make it very challenging to do what you want.

Well I'll give it a shot and see. Hope we get a program that will be more like DVD Shrink on Blu soon. Thanks for setting the record straight. I can deal with the main for now. I'll be getting the 50GB discs soon so no compression at all there...untill the 500GB Blu's start getting used for films

Soon is a relative term. It's unlikely to happen within the next year. Slysoft is now working on basic functionality. And by basic, I mean, rip streams, convert to mkv, etc. Next iteration will add more functionality like hopefully menu support, keeping extras, etc. Transcoding/encoding will be the final function they add so we're looking at many months at this point. It's going to be a while just to get the first iteration out. Considering you have 3 video codecs to support and a multitude of audio, any transcoding/encoding solution is going to need to handle all of that. That's a major undertaking. One that people just don't seem to understand.

I understand that this is a massive undertaking, but things happen fairly quickly in technology these days. I don't mind just having the main movie for now. Then again if you have the 50GB disc then no need for any compression at all




Don't bet on it. The BDA has said prices will remain high for the forseeable future. There was an article on the main page about it a week or two ago.
I can buy brand new Blu Ray disc off Amazon (Ironman is $27.) for a pretty decent price so thats a big price cut from the $40-$45 price movies on Blu used to be. I think blank media will still be a bit more high cost for a while. I can hold off backing up all my Blu Ray movies and just do the best of the collection until price comes down a bit more

In theory. 50 gigs isn't always 50 gigs. But yea, the technology we want is being worked on, it'll just take time.

And you can get the DVD for less than 20 bucks. Until prices fall to that level, Blu-ray is considered expensive by the average Joe Consumer. Same with the players. But in any case, HOPEFULLY prices will continue to fall. I'd love to get some 50's myself but they aren't even remotely cheap at the moment.

Ok I used ripbot and the movie (Forbidden Kingdom) looks great and is compressed down to around 8.8GB BUT the movie is lagging in audio and pauses from time to time and sometimes it seems as if the people are moving in slow motion...anyone know exactly how I need to set ripbot to get a good quality blu ray rip?

Can someone help me out? I just got my blu-ray burner an LG GGC-H20L which came with an LG BD-RE 25GB single layer Blu-Ray disc. I ripped a blu-ray movie via AnyDVD HD and used ImgBurn to burn it to my media. I used all the appropriate settings and the burn was successful. Now when I load it into my PC Blu-Ray player, the movie reads and shows the Paramount's Hi-Definition screen, and then after that screen it stops and nothing else pops up. I can't get to the movies menu select screen or any other screen for that matter. I tried the disc in my Ps3 and the same happens. The paramount Hi-Definition screen plays and then the screen goes blank. I have no idea why this keeps happening and was wondering if any of you had any ideas or have had this happen to you. It just seems like it won't access any additional chapters on the disc. Thanks for your help.

On a side note: I tried playing the m2ts files straight off my HD and they work. I also tried playing the m2ts files off the BD-RE disc via windows explorer and they also work! So the movie burned fine.
