Hi all,

Lets see if anybody can shed any light on this bad boy.

Just purchased an (ADDITIONAL HDD) internal barracuda 160gb HDD (SATA), but when i connect it and re-boot the system i get a failed message yet the memory size of barracuda is shown. Both 'SATA 0' & 'SATA 2' ports are working fine, all cables are working fine.

When i go into the Bios 'SATA O' is switched to 'ON' but 'SATA 2' is switched to 'OFF', therefore in my eyes switching 'SATA 2' to 'ON' should activate the port which it does. When i re-start and boot up again with both HHD connected, it goes straight to a failed screen. Why is this? Why aint my computer recognizing the HDD, i mean i cannot even get to the reformat stage because the bloody computer will not recognize the secondary HDD.

If anymore info is required, then let me know.

Does my computer support 'SATA 2', thats a good question because i assumed that if my computer used SATA technology my machine would be capable of using SATA 2. How can i find out if it does support SATA 2?

Let me just add to this thread. Tonight i popped down PC WORLD and they done free of charge a test on this dam barracuda HDD, and to my dismay it bloody works, which is A good thing dont get me wrong but makes the mystery all the more annoying.

Now when you mention what is the Drive set to, im assuming (i do a lot of assuming, sorry) you mean primary and slave etc. If so, i am led to believe that SATA HDD's dont require you to set the secondary drive to 'slave' because the Bios is meant to do it for you. Am i wrong?

Is your Dell known by another model name? I can't find any info on DM051.

For instance, mine's a Dimension E520 (also known as DM061, I believe).

There should be a jumper on the back of the new drive that will indicate whether it's set to 150MB/s or 300MB/s or something similar.

I'd guess that at 18months old it's probably only SATA 1.

Here's a link to the Seagate page that explains the jumpers. It would appear that SATA2 is the default setting.

You might try this.Make sure which HDD is on which position(sata 0,sata1,etc.)After you switch both sata postions to "on",go to the boot setup and make sure the computer is still booting on the old drive,then give it a try.

Arachne: name is 'DIMENSION 5150 / E510'

Just visited the Seagate website and it would appear that my computer should automatically detect the HDD....so annoying

I have indeed put both SATA 1 & SATA 2 to the ON position and made sure the boot order is correct but on re-booting i still get this bloody black screen with a failure message.

I have updated my Bios to the 2007 version and that has made no difference.

I was up until 11pm last night trying everything, i even popped round my brothers and put it in his machine which deteced it but copying his Bios was pointless as his Bios was a completely different set-up to mine.

It has to be something in my Bios which is the problem.

Just to double check, you should have 2 options in your BIOS - RAID On and RAID Autodetect/ATA.

Have you made sure it's set to RAID Autodetect/ATA?

I'm guessing you aren't wanting to run a RAID setup, so running the HDDs in IDE compatible mode *might* be a way to get it working.

BTW, just a FYI - my other PC is running an SATA-II HDD with no problems on an SATA-I mobo. So providing the jumpers TimC mentioned are set correctly, that should be OK.
